At Thanksgiving time, we’re pretty sure the Fuddlebrook gang, like many of us, will gather round the table for their Thanksgiving feast. After the table is cleared, hold on to your butter knife and spoon for some science activities that teach friction and Newton’s First Law of Motion. The Fuddlebrook Magic Money Stack from the book, The Sled Race, is our experiment feature this month and provides a lot of entertainment using just nickels and your butter knife.

Halloween is usually about trick or treating, often heavy on the treats. What child doesn’t want to come home from a productive night of gathering a sack full of delectable candy? October is also a month of mystery. This month we offer an activity that solves a mystery and also allows an opportunity to talk about health, nutrition, and the effects of too much sugar consumption. Most importantly, though, it demonstrates the concept of density in a fun and memorable way.

There’s no better time of year for science than in the fall. From the changing leaves to shorter days to spooky Halloween science, you’re only limited by your imagination. While not everyone celebrates Halloween, we use the holiday and its traditions to create a memorable lesson about polymers.

A Styrofoam® cup (polystyrene) and some acetone (adult supervision required) create a very cool activity the kids will absolutely love. In honor of Halloween, we call this science lesson Wanda the Melting Witch. (If you don’t like witches, call it what it is, a “melting” cup. The science is the same.)

This month we're featuring our Quirkle book, Inquisitive Inman. Inquisitive Inman introduces the concept of scientific inquiry to his friends, Ippy and Izzy Iguana. Discover what happens when Ippy has an incident with indigo ink. Scientific terms such as inquire, infer, and compare are introduced in this Quirkles adventure. You won’t want to miss the two experiments. Find out how to make invisible letters appear.

Color is all around us and there’s no time like the Fall to experience it. The trees, the fall leaves, and the bright colored pumpkins all add to the wonder of the season. Let’s take a moment to consider the science of color. It’s truly awesome!

Watch our video as we identify different parts of a leaf and make beautiful fall artwork too in our activity “Liza’s Leaf Rubbings.”

Happy first day of fall! 🍂 On September 22, the autumnal equinox, which signals the start of fall in the Northern Hemisphere, finally brings an end to hot summer on Monday. This happens at a precise moment each September, typically on the 22nd or 23rd, when the sun is directly above the equator.

This month we're featuring our Fuddlebrook book, Who Stole Herman Tweed. Its a great one to start with as it introduces science process skills. Sherlock Holmes is a fictional detective created by Scottish author, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. He uses forensic science as one of his methods for investigating crimes. In real life, some scientists work every day analyzing and solving crimes. Forensic science uses a broad range of sciences to answer questions related to legal matters. In the book, Who Stole Herman Tweed?, Freddie and Bert learn not to jump to conclusions without thoroughly analyzing all the evidence.

Keeping the kiddos entertained during these days of summer can create pressure. But the fact is, we are all under pressure, 14.7 pounds per square inch, to be exact! Yes, air is all around us and air pressure is an important science concept to learn about! Now that you’ve paused to think about how important air pressure really is, read the Quirkles book Pressure Pete and then check out Pressure Pete’s Upside Down Water Bottle to learn more.
