In Girona, Brodie Chapman exchanged her road bike for a mountain bike. She talks about the importance of mountain biking and the management of his off-season.
How are you spending your off season this year?
After a few unexpected extra months in Australia this spring, I’ve decided to stay in Europe for this off season. It’s not a great time to be making non essential travel, and I want to be sure I’m close by for team camps this year. So I’m in Girona, where there is a good group of riders still, and the sun is still shining just enough.
What sort of riding are you doing?
Last week I received my new Lapierre XR 9.9, the top of the range cross country mountain bike, so I’ve pretty much exclusively been exploring the the trails on it. It’s so much fun Having a dual suspension bike again, which can handle the pedalling and gives me a bit of slack on the descents.
But it’s the off season. Shouldn’t you be resting?
I am resting from training, but not from activity. Don’t forget most of us became pro athletes because we thrive off constant activity. I am not doing any hard or intense riding, but enjoying the outdoors, the new sensations on the mountain bike and only riding every second day or so.
What are you three favourite places to mountain bike?
Blue Derby, Tasmania; Innsbruck Austria and Mount Buller in Australia.
And how do you shift the focus back, dare we ask?
Towards the end of the month I’ll start shifting the focus back to road cycling. But for reco days, where it’s really just about spinning the legs I’ll continue with mountain biking as long as the weather allows. I’ll work with my coach for fitness goals and a training program, and we have a great group in Girona to train with over the winter. It will be a different build up than previous years without the Australian racing program, and I’m excited to be able to try opening next season in a new way.
Any other plans for off season indulgences?
Late nights dancing around the house, frequent La Bombonera (gelato) and Casa Cacao visits in Girona.
