Leaders with the district made some adjustments to the virtual academy and extended the deadline to give families time to decide which learning platform will work best for their students.

Some of the adjustments for the spring semester are:

• Every student K-12 student that’s enrolled in the virtual academy will be required to log into every class at their scheduled time to be counted as present.
• Students might not have the same teachers next semester as they do this semester.

The goal is to have teachers from the district only teach for Huntsville Virtual Academy, not switch between traditional and virtual learning.

The deadline to enroll in the Huntsville Virtual Academy was previously set for Wednesday but was extended to Friday.

Huntsville City Schools unveiled its plan Thursday night for the 2020-2021 year, which includes two options for schooling and a variety of changes aimed at preventing the spread of COVID-19 among students and staff.

“We’re building a ship (while) we’ve been sailing,” said Huntsville City Schools Superintendent Christie Finley. “We’ve been given something and we had to create a whole plan from scratch.”

“We hope the choices people are making today will allow us to go to school in August,” said the superintendent.

Alabama “absolutely” intends to reopen schools for in-class instruction the fall, though virtual school will be available to all students, said State Superintendent Dr. Eric Mackey today.

“This is indeed going to be the most difficult school year we have ever faced,” he said during a press conference this morning where he announced a roadmap for reopening Alabama’s K-12 schools.

Local districts will make their own decisions about how they open, and “students should expect things are not going to be completely back to normal,” Mackey said.

Alabama State Department of Education (ALSDE) State Superintendent Dr. Eric Mackey declared high school seniors who are on track to graduate and in good standing as “meeting the graduation requirements” for the state of Alabama. In order to qualify for early completion of a class, the student must be up to date on their class assignments and have a passing grade in the class.

HCS is providing seniors with two options. They may continue with coursework through the final nine weeks during this period of blended learning. Additionally, seniors may elect to use their existing class average (as of the end of the third nine weeks only) as the final grade for the fourth nine weeks. If seniors choose this option, the course average would be calculated by averaging the first semester average (50 percent of total grade) with the third nine weeks grade (50 percent of total grade).

Alabama K-12 public schools should plan for students to finish their school year at home, Gov. Kay Ivey said today.

“This decision has not been made lightly," said Ivey in a press conference late today. She said she hoped Alabama would be able to welcome back students on April 6. “However, the virus continues to spread.”

Alabama’s K-12 public and private school buildings have been closed by state health order since March 19 to slow the spread of the coronavirus. Ivey today issued an order that all local school systems should adopt a plan to finish the academic year through “alternative methods of instruction,” such as online courses, beginning April 6.

Alabama Gov. Kay Ivey made the announcement during a press conference Thursday afternoon.

Huntsville City Schools will resume classes online beginning April 6th. The school buildings will remain closed. Current plans are to offer curbside wifi and mobile wifi on buses for those students and families needing internet service. The district's plans are evolving with the superintendent and her team planning additional updates in the coming days.

Huntsville City Schools - March 17 Update-

We have consolidated our FREE Curbside Lunch Service Sites. The following school locations will continue to offer the FREE meal service for youth 18 yrs. of age and under Monday-Friday from 10:30AM - 1:00PM through March 27th.

Participating School Sites:
Lee High School – 2500 Meridian St., Huntsville, AL 35811
Lakewood Elem. – 3501 Kenwood Dr., Huntsville, AL 35810
Morris Elem/Middle – 4801 Bob Wallace Rd., Huntsville, AL 35805
Chaffee Elem. – 7900 Whittier Rd, Huntsville, AL 35802
In addition, City of Huntsville Transit will be operating all fixed route service on regular normal published schedules Monday through Friday. Any child or individual that tells a Bus Operator that he/she is riding to get to a feeding site may ride for free.

Monday through Friday: 6:00AM – 9:00PM

Huntsville City Schools is closed until April 6.

Staff and teachers will be in the building on Monday, March 16th so that families can pick up essential items, such as medications, technology devices, student materials, gym clothes, etc. between 7:30 a.m.- 4:00 p.m. We urge and remind families that Monday will be the only day in which families can pick up these items. The school buildings will be locked and secured after Monday, March 16th.

Huntsville City Schools will serve grab-and-go meals from 10:30 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. on Monday, March 16th, Tuesday, March 17th and Wednesday, March 18th. Meal pick-up will take place in your child’s school car line. Information on HCS meal services from Thursday, March 19th through the remainder of the school closure will be provided on the district website.
