Submissions for the 2026 Afritondo Short Story Prize are now officially CLOSED. ✨

This year’s theme, “transition”, brought in more than 760 stories from writers in over 40 countries around the world.

From Nigeria, Kenya, South Africa, Zimbabwe, Ghana, Uganda, Zambia, Botswana and Tanzania, to the UK, US, Canada and many more, writers have trusted Afritondo with bold, boundary‑pushing fiction.

We also received stories from places like Lesotho, Malawi, Rwanda, Eswatini, Namibia, Mozambique, Trinidad and Tobago, Barbados, Antigua and Barbuda, Seychelles and South Sudan—voices that remind us just how far Black and African storytelling reaches.

Our deepest thanks to every writer who submitted.

Next up: our judges begin reading and deliberating as we move towards the longlist, shortlist and winner announcement.

Stay tuned 💛

Every year, Afritondo publishes the longlist of the Afritondo Short Story Prize in an anthology, and this year is no exception.

We are proud to reveal the cover of our latest anthology: This Is How To Stay Alive, named after the powerful story by Ghanaian writer, Baaba Tekyi-Mensah. This title perfectly captures the spirit of this year’s collection, in which writers explore the theme of "mask"—uncovering the faces we wear and the hidden truths beneath.

The anthology features 15 stories written by talented writers from 9 different countries, each reflecting on the theme of the mask. Together, these stories illuminate survival, transformation, and the art of staying alive, both seen and unseen.

Watch this space for release dates, author spotlights, and details on how to get your copy.
