This post marks my last as Racine's writer in residence. The past six months have provided a point of connection through poetry, to Racine and to others. The position has also offered me an opportunity to care for my own writing, to give it time and attention. I sought to use the writer-in-residence designation as an avenue to explore my relationship to Racine....

I continue to wrap up my residency by sharing some of my own writing produced in response to previous prompts I’ve offered over the last six months. While I imagined sharing multiple pieces this week, I instead have one to share. But it’s one I really like—at least right now. This poem came out of prompt #21: In the kitchen. It’s a poem about our kitchen table, and where it came from, and how much I love eating at that table with my family, a small portion of a much larger family I carry with me as I move through my life....

After weeks (months) of offering prompts related to finding bits of poetry in our daily lives across Racine County, I shared last week I intend to offer some of my own writing in response as near the end of my residency. This week I share with you a few poems I've written in response to my own prompts: the first poem being writing in response to blog post #22: Aliveness, the second in response to blog post #12: The place where you live, and the last two haikus prompted by post #9: Short, sweet and true....

My favorite poems are the ones that make the most ordinary things of life seem like the most special, noteworthy, extravagant. There's something that really shocks me, every time, about a poem that takes the simple things—eating an orange, the interior of an apartment, a conversation over dinner, a walk along the river—and makes them the biggest things. The often-overlooked signals to the beyond....

Call for Submissions for the August issue of Moss Piglet with its theme, JUNK.

We have something in common: Junk. It's everywhere. On countertops, in drawers, closets, basements, and backyards. It's the stuff of vintage shops and flea markets, of dumpsters, and scrap yards. Salvage trucks roam neighborhoods looking for it on curbs. Every Saturday somewhere, it's on display on driveways for rummage sales. It's our cast-offs, but for someone else, it's a prize.

Share your poems, stories, artwork, photos, and comics about Junk with us for our August issue. Send your best stuff to us by July 2nd to [email protected]

It's the time of year when I find myself thinking about food more, and not just food itself—but also where it comes from and how it gets to my table. A big part of the joy of summer for me is the seasonality of food. It feels like food comes into focus this time of year, and I get excited about the way time begins to reward us....

About the Krazines

The Krazines (formerly the Kenosha/Racine Area Zine Makers) are an art-making, creative writing, and zine publishing group, whose membership is open to anyone who wishes to take part from Kenosha, Racine, or anywhere else in the world.

The Krazines were founded in 2016 as a part of Left of the Lake, LLC. Their first event took place in February 2016 at Public Craft Brewery in downtown Kenosha, WI when several celebrated zinesters entertained and educated at this social place. In the following month (and ever since), artists and authors of all ages and abilities have produced pages to be published in our full-color, professionally-printed zine.

Copies are provided to contributors and sold to subscribers, as well as limited amount of copies are for sale to the general public.

In non-COVID times between 2016 and early 2020, The Krazines hosted monthly Art Jams on first Saturdays at galleries, shops, museums, coffee houses, and private residences in the Kenosha and Racine area. They hope to return to greeting you at Art Jams at some time in 2021.
