Actually crying right now.
If you attended any of the events I was at this fall, and heard about my mom’s journey you know why.
THIS is how change happens. 🦋You learn something 🦋You tell (at least 3 people): one peer, someone younger and (please please please) someone older. This member post this morning fills my cup…but also how lucky is this mom to have her daughter here learning how to advocate for her!
My mom did not have chronic re-occurring UTIs (urinary tract infections) because she was “unlucky”; she had chronic, reoccurring UTIs in postmenopause because her ovaries stopped making estrogen when she was 49. When estrogen declines at menopause, the urethra gets shorter and smaller making it more susceptible to infection (UTI is most common) and despite ongoing (debilitating) issues with dry eyes, dry mouth, vaginal dryness, urinary incontinence, pelvic organ prolapse and repeated UTIs, no one knew to offer her estrogen; vaginal or otherwise. I was in my 30s and 40s and did not know what I know now.
This does not have to be YOUR mother’s story. Vaginal estrogen is approved and recommended by the Canadian and American Urological Associations for the prevention of re-occurring UTIs.
Thank you for paying it forward 🦋
