"I’m more eloquent with silence."—Lindsay Kemp. The man who taught David Bowie mime, Kate Bush drama, and a generation how to dance through the gloom.

Revisiting an unpublished 2001 interview—because 2025 could use more romance, fantasy, and play.

"Art is never created in a vacuum—every dance, every movement, is shaped by the world around it." writes Katja Vaghi . From Louis XIV’s courtly geometries to de Keersmaeker’s hypnotic repetitions, bodies have always mirrored their societies. What if true creativity lives in the cracks of perfection? What does it mean to dance when survival is uncertain? What does it take to sustain an independent space for movement and thought in times of crisis?

In our upcoming issue, Sasha Portyannikova takes inside SDVIG—an experimental dance venue in St. Petersburg that has persisted through repression, instability, and war. A place where dance remains a non-violent practice, even when the world outside is anything but.

When the body writes and the poem dances... ✨

There’s a moment when movement becomes verse—when rhythm isn’t just felt, but spoken through skin. Last summer, Yara learned that dance and poetry share the same heartbeat: bim bim bim.

It’s the:
🌀 Shiver before a leap
🌀 Stutter in a first draft
🌀 Silence between steps (or syllables)

—that makes art alive.

Read how Bukowski (yes, that Bukowski) helped her unlock this below. And tell us below: Where do you find your flow? In motion? In words? Or somewhere in between?

"I was running away, but now I’m running toward." 🏹🏹🏹

This summer, my life changed forever. From a skeptic who’d never seen live dance to someone utterly captivated by Erick Hawkins’ Naked Leopard—a performance so raw, so Zen, it felt like the universe moving through him.

Hawkins, at 62, became a leopard on stage, his movements fluid, deliberate, and effortless. It wasn’t just dance; it was philosophy in motion. Inspired by Zen in the Art of Archery, I learned to let life happen through me, not by me.

The World through the Lens of Dance

a Dance Mag is an independent global magazine that looks at the world through the lens of dance.

Because awareness of motion — of our bodies, of ideas, of the flow and unfolding of nature — help us better understand ourselves and the world we live in.
