Amaziah challenges Amos:
Watch and Read (two different presentations on the same topic)
๐น Background:
Amos was a prophet from Judah, sent by God to prophesy primarily to the Northern Kingdom of Israel during the reign of Jeroboam II.
Amaziah was the priest of Bethel, serving in a royal shrine established by the king of Israel (Jeroboam II) โ not Godโs appointed place of worship in Jerusalem.
๐น Key Story:
๐ Amos 7:10โ17
Conflict Summary: Amaziah opposes Amos' prophecy:
Amos had prophesied judgment against Israel, including the death of Jeroboam and the exile of the people (Amos 7:9, 11).
Amaziah, loyal to the king and the false worship at Bethel, reported Amos to King Jeroboam II (v. 10โ11) and accused him of conspiracy.
Amaziah confronts Amos:
He tells Amos to stop prophesying in Israel and return to Judah:
"Go, you seer! Flee to the land of Judah... But never again prophesy at Bethel, for it is the king's sanctuary and the temple of the kingdom." (Amos 7:12โ13)
Amos responds boldly:
Amos replies that he is not a prophet by profession but was called by God:
"I was neither a prophet nor a prophet's son... but the LORD took me from tending the flock and said to me, โGo, prophesy to my people Israel.โ" (v. 14โ15)
Amos pronounces judgment on Amaziah:
Because Amaziah tried to silence God's message, Amos declares God's judgment:
His wife will become a pr******te.
His children will die by the sword.
His land will be divided.
He will die in exile.
Israel will go into exile (v. 16โ17).
๐น Lessons from the Story:
Faithfulness to God may bring opposition from religious or political leaders.
Prophetic truth can challenge comfortable systems.
Rejecting Godโs message has serious consequences.
