Project: Arafat Accommodation Project
Architects: Besnik Nurçaj, Elion Ismajli, Leontina Cena
Location: Arafat, Mecca, Saudi Arabia
Project Year: 2024
The Arafat Accommodation project, located 20 km southeast of Mecca, Saudi Arabia, is designed to meet the needs of pilgrims during a significant part of their ritual. The project blends traditional Islamic architecture with modern sustainability, creating a functional and inspiring space.
The design is inspired by the traditional courtyard housing typology, fostering a sense of community and tranquility. The structure is built around inner courtyards, where modular cubes create dynamic facades that facilitate natural ventilation through green spaces. The inclusion of water elements and shaded areas helps mitigate the harsh climate, offering pilgrims the necessary coolness and comfort.
The project uses modular cuboids made from colored concrete and glass, which have been carefully selected to align with durability and aesthetic elegance, in accordance with the Al-Maeshari guidelines. The modular cuboid design is fire-resistant, flexible, and highly efficient, allowing functional adaptability.
The project includes two spatial layout variants, square and circular variant, both of them ensure 3.5m2 per pilgrim. The spaces are clearly divided into accommodation areas, essential services (toilets, ablution spaces), prayer rooms, medical care facilities, information centers, and well-planned circulation routes.
The Arafat Accommodation project offers a comfortable and sustainable experience, preserving cultural heritage while embracing modern innovations.
