I love that this finally got to see the light of day. It's my 1992 rough mix of a track I recorded with Billy out on Shelter Island. Which eventually was re-cut for the River Of Dreams album.

Billy Joel: And So It Goes - The Musical Companion to the HBO Documentary Film to be released on digital music outlets TOMORROW - July 26, 2025!

The 100-track collection features songs heard in the documentary, as well as many other recordings from the Piano Man’s long music career. The career-spanning compilation boasts classic hits, alternate versions, and live performances, and includes dozens of previously unreleased tracks. It also features a variety of interview snippets from the documentary.

Among the rare recordings is “December Theme (December Song),” from the sessions for Joel’s 1971 debut album Cold Spring Harbor. There are also unreleased performances of “My Life” from Billy’s 100th Madison Square Garden residency show and “An Innocent Man” from a concert in London.

Additional previously unreleased tracks featured on the compilation include a new mix of the Cold Spring Harbor tune “Tomorrow Is Today,” a live performance of “You’re My Home” and an early version of the Piano Man track “Everybody Has a Dream” recorded during the Cold Spring Harbor sessions.

Starting on Monday, July 28, and continuing in the coming months, many rare tracks will be posted on Joel’s YouTube channel, including previously unseen accompanying video footage. The material was unearthed during the making of the documentary. Among the videos that will premiere eventually is a clip of Joel playing “Scenes from an Italian Restaurant” live for the first time. The performance took place on May 6, 1977 at C.W. Post College in Brookville, New York.

It's funny looking back on records I've worked on, the things you remember and the things you forget. On this record I only remember recording the break in this song. Steve Gadd on drums, somehow Steve plays that 16thish note feel cowbell in the break, at first ok but then he comes back in with the drum kit while still playing the pattern on the cowbell. I had to stand up to see if i could see his hands. I couldn't believe he was doing it. There is a cowbell overdub thats just accents, and congas but the main pattern he is playing with the kit live. That and dinner at an excellent J*panese restaurant, I went back many time, but what ever they served us with Sadao Wantanabe present, wasn't on the menu.

I recorded and mixed this some years ago. Alan Childs Drums, Carmine Rojas Bass, Chuck Kentis synth, Justin Clayton and the great David Brown on guitars. ( Solo is David through a synclav audio to midi with about 100ms delay to a DX7 with Harmonica patch) Recorded at Compass Point Bahamas, Mixed at the Hit Factory NY, Mastered by Ted Jensen. Crazy but in their own way great times.
