Good singing performances are hard to come by in the sleepy town of Ipoh. A few nights ago, we had the pleasure to listen to the charming melodious voice of Angelyn Ong (王仪灵). The performance was entitled “The Jazzy Sounds of Anita Mui (芳華爵代)”. It was held at Justwine, Ipoh. Entrance fee was priced at RM90 and it came with a welcome drink.

Anita Mui, the legendary Hong Kong singer who died of cervical cancer in 2003, was well-known for her songs and talent. However, Angelyn Ong, was relatively unknown to us. That night, we went without much expectations but boy, were we blown away by her marvelous singing!

Angelyn started the night with the song “Bad Girl (坏女孩)”. In no time, we were mesmerised by her talented vocals and excellent showmanship. Anita’s hits like “Woman Flower (女人花)”, “The Years Flow Like Water (似水流年)” and many more were sung that night. As the venue of the performance was small and intimate, to our delight, Angelyn even agreed to a few song requests! The crowd requested songs from Leslie Cheung and Faye Wong, to which she sang beautifully, showcasing her talent as a versatile singer.

That night, we rekindled sweet memories of Cantopop’s glorious yesteryears. All thanks to Angelyn’s wonderful performance. It is no wonder that this small petite lady has an achievement of a shocking 2.5 million minutes of viewer time over 300 online shows. Her lush vocals and passionate singing had definitely enthralled all of us present that night. Hopefully, more good performances like hers will be easily available in Ipoh in future.

Sushi Zento has been around for quite a number of years. Despite facing fierce competition from the ever-growing list of Japanese restaurants around, this eatery still stands tall and is a popular choice among Ipoh folks. It is almost crowded every time I choose to dine in here for dinner. To me, this is quite an achievement for eateries in times of a pandemic. 💪

The menu here is extensive. You get to choose from a variety of Japanese noodles, yakitori, sashimi, rice and many more. Food portion here is good too. The mains are filling and can be easily shared if you are a small eater. The salmon skin and soft-shell crab salad we ordered was so generous that the vegetables were well hidden beneath the seafood toppings! 😋 Taste wise, there were some hits and misses. The unagi bento was extra flavorful. The ramen soup lacked a bit of taste but the most disappointing was the sushi. To me, sushi is supposed to be simple yet delicate. However, the size of the sushi here was as big as my mouth. Also, it should not fall apart as soon as I try to eat it. The sushi here failed in this aspect because as soon as I picked it up with my pair of chopsticks, some fell into pieces. 😞

A side is around the RM10 mark while all day sets are RM40+. It is on the higher side but if you have a Public Bank card, they have good deals till 31 December 2022. You get 10% off normal priced items and for Monday dinners, you even get 20% off regular set dinners. (Terms and conditions apply)
