Through hard work and courage, African-American runner Jesse Owens overcame racism, poverty and poor health. He won four gold medals in the 1936 Olympics, in Hitler’s Germany, proving that Blacks could compete at the highest level. This is part of Simon & Schuster’s Childhood of Famous Americans series, and is written under the name M. M. Eboch.

Learn about the many challenges he faced before founding his famous chocolate company. He struggled in school, had a difficult family situation, and went through multiple bankruptcies. Later in life, Mr. Hershey shared his good fortune by founding a school for disadvantaged children. This is part of Simon & Schuster’s Childhood of Famous Americans series.

Jinnie Wishmaker reveals the magic in everyday things. It's a story about overcoming hardship, as Jinnie has dyslexia, and how gathering your friends and family (and the occasional random yard critter) is the key to winning the battles that come her way. Jinnie's dyslexia isn't magically cured, but she learns how to celebrate each success of her own rather than compare herself to others. Families reading this story will enjoy the dynamics between the siblings, the grandmother, and the aunt and uncle who have taken Jinnie and her brother in while their parents are in the Amazon jungle.
Themes in the story: resilience, older sibling responsibility, dyslexia, bullies, kinship placement, moving to a new city and school, making friends, relying on others.
