In this Patreon exclusive episode, Rachel Bernstein explores the psychological and social dynamics that unfold when a cult leader is attacked or faced with accusations. The episode covers the common defensive responses from followers, such as ad hominem attacks, increased group cohesion, and rationalization. Rachel explains the backfire effect, conspiracy theories, and the widespread emotional turmoil that often leads to trauma, cognitive dissonance, and social isolation among cult members. The narrative also touches upon the potential outcomes for cults during such crises, whether they dissolve, fracture, or continue under new leadership. Additionally, it underscores the importance of seeking justice against offending leaders to deter further harm.
