Fourth Street Barbecue Inc., a Charleroi-area food processor, plans to shut down by the end of October — cutting 252 jobs at its plants in Speers and Fallowfield.

The closure adds to the region’s economic struggles following recent shutdowns of a glass plant and a pasta factory. Company officials haven’t commented, but state filings say lenders are expected to place the business into receivership.

The Westmoreland County Airport Authority is bracing for leaner months ahead as flight reductions by its only commercial carrier and a freeze on county subsidy payments threaten to shrink revenue through late 2025.

“We’re prepared for it,” says Gabe Monzo, the authority’s executive director, on what is expected to be period of declining revenue. “We have enough cash flow. We did some layoffs last winter, and, because of the schedule we have now, we don’t think we have to do layoffs this year.”

A man accused of shooting a Monroeville police sergeant as he responded to an armed robbery last year took the witness stand on Tuesday and told the jury he didn’t do it.

Jamal Brooks said he didn’t rob Crumbl Cookie the night of Jan. 3, 2024, and he didn’t fire 16 shots at Sgt. James MacDonald — hitting him twice.
