Oonagh Duckworth wonders: Is ‘the kunst’ in Brussels looking beyond mirrors to our human selves towards the bigger pictures of which we are part?

“As the world unravels around us, bowing to brutality and war, it feels a huge, borderline guilty privilege to still be able to be part of an annual city-wide artsy vibe: the Kunstenfestivaldesarts (KFDA), or the kunst to those in the know. Brussels’ international festival of cutting-edge contemporary theatre, dance and performance, celebrating its 30th edition this year, continues to draw a large, discerning audience.”

Critical distances #4: An outsider inside by

The award-winning writer on ain’t knowing nothing about dance and being more betterer with words

In the last of four texts on the theme of ‘critical distances’, writer and editor Kaliane Bradley recalls grappling with the grammar of dance – if such exists – as an outsider versed in a different language. Also in the series: Sanjoy Roy on navigating editorial dependence and independence; Dom Czapski on writing about a field that you are also personally and professionally involved in; and Budapest-based Lena Megyeri, on critical distances between eastern and western European writers.

“There is no such thing as a grammatically correct dance piece.
Even as I put the full stop on that sentence, I question its veracity. Who am I to pontificate about the ‘correctness’ of a dance? If I accept – as I think I must – that individual gestures may have mimetic meaning, and a sequence of gestures or movements might work within a relational system to convey an intention, then I am surely accepting a grammar of dance; and if there is a discernible grammar, does it not follow that there is a dance equivalent of an incorrect sentence, e.g.: In this medium, I ain’t know nothing?” – Kaliane Bradley

Callysta Croizer writes about goodbyes, hellos and no-shows at the 45th edition of Montpellier Danse

"Montpellier Danse has always been on the move. Yet the 45th edition of this French festival, founded in 1981 by Dominique Bagouet, was particularly turbulent. First, it bid a twofold farewell: not only was it the last one programmed by Jean-Paul Montanari before he stepped down from his leading position after 42 years, but it was also the first that Montanari would not see himself, as he died on 25 April 2025, just a few weeks before the opening. This sad news, that profoundly affected the French dance community, gave a deeper meaning to Montanari’s handover. Second, the festival merged with the National Choreographic Center (CCN) of Montpellier, both housed at the Agora-Cité International de la danse. "

Evgeny Borisenko reviews

Making Life in the Ruins – International Performance Festival produced this May by Sophiensaele and curated by Mateusz Szymanówka and Lena Kollender.

“The festival curators, Lena Kollender and Mateusz Szymanówka say that the ‘ruins’ concept came along when they already had a few shows in mind for the festival programme. Many works that had stayed with them over the last few years carried a feeling of imminent collapse, but instead of indulging in convenient despondency, conceived the ‘state of ruination’ as a site of departure and new beginning.”
