Introducing SIGNAL to NOISE by Eve Luckring ✨

Signal to Noise is a haunting of the ears, a fathoming of loss, an appraisal of fragmented attention. Constructed in two parts, the book invites the reader into a state of transitional uncertainty as it navigates the interiority of grief and the precarity of living as a social being. Author Eve Luckring’s progressive hearing disability serves as a sounding board for a dissonant landscape of foiled communication. Through a continual shifting of proximities, Signal to Noise reckons with a network of contradiction, yearning, and fragility implicit to the connectivity of existence.

From what do we assemble ourselves, of what fervors is that scene of us comprised? Jones Very—named after Ralph Waldo Emerson’s haunted acolyte—is an ecology of oxymel and abacus. The questions it nurses, the visions it tenders, accumulate by way of atmosphere and filigree. And its ensuing micro-scenes (last straw maquette and intimacy salvage) give off what Thoreau might call the bronze light of when the world that lights our own moves in or out of eclipse. If friendship is a way of inventing a still improbable manner of being, the rapport of Jones Very— “conducted… from the rumor / of our formerly / transponding selves”—is its pine needle almanac. The tessellating virtue of this enterprise: that we move through it without shorthand, feeling the lavishness of its undertow as our own. “I live there,” Jones Very tells us, “in the factory of a feather / wristed voice.” In the seer’s practicum, the romance of its warbled over-time.

AN INCH THICK is a future-mythic life story in lullaby, peopled by punkish attempts to bind and measure and hold still (attempts egged on by the memory of their impossibility). These texts were written between ages 19 and 26, after an itinerant Southwestern upbringing. They hold: fleeing from homes, homes that flee, femme s*x in all directions, hedonism, cheap snacks, swelling, shrinking, bloating, and endless attempts to grow the good.
