We celebrate the life of one of our most profound alumna, the legendary songstress, composer, performer and artistic icon Roberta Flack (B.M.E. ’58 D.Mus. ’75).

Flack was born in Asheville, North Carolina, raised in Richmond and later Arlington, VA. At the age of 15, she was a classically trained pianist and earned a music scholarship to attend Howard University.

While at the Mecca, she performed on campus, sang in student talent shows, and directed opera. In 1954, The Hilltop wrote about her “easy flowing vocals.”

She graduated from Howard and went on to become the first artist to ever win the Grammy Award for Record of the Year for two consecutive years. Her first win was for “The First Time I Ever Saw Your Face,” a song that spent six weeks on the Billboard Top 100 Charts, making it Billboard’s top song of the year.

In 1974, she released “Killing Me Softly,” a hit that made it to Rolling Stone’s and Billboard’s listings of the greatest songs of all time.

Over the course of an incredible career, she inspired countless performers through her talent, showmanship, professionalism, and sheer charisma. She will be deeply missed.
