A friend invited me to an artist’s walkabout at a gallery in central Cape Town. Joy Carkeek is soft-spoken and gentle. A former art teacher, during lockdown she started to experiment with her artworks. Tearing them up, burying them in soil, experimenting with simple poetry. Haiku. Powerful pieces.

I was expecting slow stitching and repurposing but the poignancy of some of the exhibits evoked strong emotions.

We messed up and I’m sorry. Watching Don’t Look Up when it was released in 2021 I focused on the satire, the wit, and dark humour. The warnings were there, and writer, director, and producer of Don’t Look Up, Adam McKay, was spot on.

Re-watching it, in the light of the Californian blazes and the inauguration of a climate-ignorant US president for the second time (I cannot mention his name for fear that the algorithm will find me and shove more orange monster ‘news’ down my throat) I feel a chill.

“You knew, we told you what would happen!” yells the scientist played by Leonardo di Caprio. Scientists around the world are saying the same thing as the climate crisis gets a grip on the planet, wholly unprepared for the devastation of successive droughts, heatwaves, fires, and wars.
