Fiddler in Your Living Room: NH Jewish Film Fest Goes Virtual May 14-17
NHJFF presents free documentary screening and Zoom Q&A with “Fiddler on the Roof” actress Joanne Borts

STILL FIDDLING AFTER 50 YEARS – Debuting on Broadway in 1964, the musical “Fiddler on the Roof” is based on the Sholem Aleichem stories about Tevye the Dairyman trying to maintain his family’s Jewish traditions amidst persecution in 1905 Tzarist Russia. The new documentary “Fiddler: A Miracle of Miracles” explores the inspiration behind the musical and its continued global impact decades later. Honoring the cultural legacy of the Broadway classic “Fiddler on the Roof,” the New Hampshire Jewish Film Festival (NHJFF) is presenting a free online screening of the new documentary “Fiddler: A Miracle of Miracles” from May 14-17. The limited 72-hour screening will be followed up with a special Zoom Q&A on May 17 with Broadway actress Joanne Borts, who most recently starred in the Yiddish-language version directed by Joel Grey.

The 12th annual NHJFF, originally scheduled for March was postponed this year due to the coronavirus pandemic. Like nearly every other cultural event in America, the TBD reschedule dates will depend on when it is safe for the public to return to theaters.

“In less than two short months, the COVID-19 pandemic has turned all of our lives upside-down,” notes NHJFF co-chair Pat Kalik, of Manchester. “Although the most important thing right now is people’s health and safety, this crisis has also separated family, friends and the community. We’re hoping that this virtual event can help bring us together, share a few uplifting moments and take our minds off the news for a while.”

“The Fiddler documentary was supposed to screen at our festival’s gala celebration in March at St. Anselm College,” adds fellow NHJFF co-chair Ross Fishbein, of Bedford. “As we look forward to gathering together in person again in the not-so-distant future, we’re very excited to bring one of the Fiddler stars into our homes to share behind-the-scenes stories.”

In the half-century since its 1964 Broadway premiere, Fiddler on the Roof has had an unprecedented global impact, beloved by audiences the world over, performed everywhere from suburban middle schools in Nebraska to grand state theaters in Japan. The 2019 documentary chronicles the birth, life, and continued resonance of this singular icon of the stage and screen, featuring interviews with Fiddler creators such as writer Joseph Stein, composer Jerry Bock and lyricist Sheldon Harnick.

The film also includes commentary from Broadway legends Stephen Sondheim and Lin-Manuel Miranda, as well as the actor who played “Tevye the Dairyman” in the original movie, Chaim Topol.

SCREENING INFORMATION: “Fiddler: A Miracle of Miracles” will screen free for 72 hours from 5 p.m. on Thursday, May 14, to 5 p.m. on Sunday, May 17. Viewers will be emailed a film link after registering at www.NHJewishFilmFestival.org or at www.BrownPaperTickets.com/profile/833384. At 7 p.m. on Sunday, May 17, a post-film Zoom discussion will be led by Broadway actress Joanne Borts, who recently starred in the Yiddish version of “Fiddler on the Roof” directed by Joel Grey.

The “Fiddler: A Miracle of Miracles” event is made possible by the generosity of our sponsors, including the Jewish Federation of New Hampshire, the New Hampshire State Council of the Arts, the National Endowment for the Arts , corporate sponsors and Friends of the Festival.

Attention Readers,

In the March/April issue, we incorrectly stated that Maple Weekend would take place on March 23rd & 24th, when in fact it was scheduled for March 21st & 22nd.

However, with the current COVID-19 situation, the NH Maple Producers Association has decided to cancel Maple Weekend and the remainder of NH Maple Month. See their full statement here: nhmapleproducers.com/2020/03/17/important-announcement-about-nh-maple-weekend-2020

Remember to continue supporting NH's maple sugaring families and find sugar houses to buy maple products from, whether they may offer pick-up and delivery options!

Here's what you need to know to grow gorgeous hydrangeas in the Granite State from the experts at the UNH Extension Education Center: https://www.fiddleheadnh.com/hydrangeas-in-the-granite-state/
