Protect Yourself This Flu Season: Key Steps for Prevention and Care
By Dr. George Kyle, Chief Medical Officer, HAPPI Health

Seasonal influenza, commonly termed “the flu” is one of the most common respiratory illnesses in the world, and if left untreated, one of the most destructive. Impacting more than one billion people per year and responsible for a staggering 300,000 deaths annually, the flu remains a significant health concern for communities across all gender and age groups. The good news? With proper preventive care, severe cases of the flu are largely preventable.

Recognizing the Symptoms:
It is common for patients to question whether symptoms indicate influenza or a less severe respiratory infection, such as the common cold and whether those symptoms warrant a more comprehensive treatment plan. While everyone’s level of discomfort varies, there are essential indicators to be mindful of that can help determine the next course of action:

Onset: Symptoms of a common cold develop gradually over a few days, while the symptoms of the flu typically develop quickly and more intensely.
Severity: Because symptoms are common to both respiratory illnesses, such as fever, headache, cough and sore throat, it’s best to consult with your healthcare provider to ensure an accurate diagnosis.
Duration: Flu symptoms tend to last longer than those of a common cold. If fever, body aches, or fatigue persist beyond a few days or worsen instead of improving, it may signal a more serious infection.

At Home Care:
There are no over-the-counter medications to cure the flu. Rest, hydration, and symptom-relief medications ease discomfort and support recovery. Plenty of sleep and drinking electrolyte-rich fluids helps the body fight infection. Fever reducers and congestion medications can improve comfort.

It’s important to note these measures are effective for symptom relief, not prevention of the flu itself. The most reliable way to protect yourself and your community is through annual vaccination, significantly reducing risk of infection and serious complications.

How the Vaccine Works:
The flu vaccine enables the development of antibodies, which target specific proteins and allows the immune system to respond quickly if exposed. These antibodies will recognize and bind to the virus, neutralizing it to prevent infection or reduce the severity of illness.

Why You Need A Flu Shot Every Year:
The flu virus is constantly changing. Each year, new strains emerge, and last year’s vaccine may not provide protection against the viruses circulating this season. Additionally, immunity from a previous flu shot gradually decreases over time, leaving you more susceptible to infection. Annual vaccination ensures your immune system is prepared to recognize and fight the most current strains.

Who Should Get Vaccinated?
Simply put everyone. Annual flu is recommended for all individuals six months and older, with particular emphasis on those at higher risk for serious complications, including young children, older adults, pregnant individuals, and people with chronic health conditions.

While flu season can be unpredictable, effective strategies like annual vaccination, good hygiene, and following guidance from reputable health organizations can help protect you and your community.

As always, if you or a loved one experience flu-like symptoms or have questions about vaccines, be sure to consult your healthcare provider to determine the best prevention and care plan for your family.

WellStone’s River Crossing: Launching a new Resource in the Fight against Addiction
By Karen Petersen, Director of Development, WellStone, Inc.

North Alabama’s mental health leader is tackling another gap in our community’s continuum of care.

WellStone recently opened River Crossing, a 16-bed, medically monitored detox facility. It’s based in a beautiful, three-story home in west Huntsville.

“River Crossing is set up to feel warm and welcoming,” said Joy Seuis, Director of Substance Abuse Programs at WellStone. “It’s nearly 10,000 sq. ft. and has six bedrooms and seven bathrooms. It’s gorgeous. We want to help our clients feel comfortable and hopeful, all while providing the best care possible.”

River Crossing serves adults who are at “imminent risk for withdrawal syndrome”—typically people with prolonged alcohol or drug use.

Withdrawal can trigger serious physical symptoms, like intense cravings, sleeplessness, headaches, nausea, tremors, and even seizures. During their visits, clients are monitored by nurses and staff 24/7. They also have access to physician care; medication administration; individual, group, and family counseling; case management; and peer support.

For too long, this often lifesaving care has been limited in Madison County, particularly for under-resourced individuals. That’s why River Crossing has been such a vital addition to North Alabama’s recovery space.
“The need has been enormous for years,” said WellStone CEO Jeremy Blair. “We’ve been stuck in an opioid epidemic, and too many people, desperate for help, haven’t been able to get the care they deserve.”
River Crossing was funded, in large part, through Opioid Settlement dollars, distributed by the Alabama Department of Mental Health.

“Many people in Madison County with a substance use disorder must travel far from home to receive detox services,” said Commissioner Kimberly Boswell, ADMH.“Investments from Opioid Settlement Funds over the past two years have helped to increase access to this essential service. Thanks to WellStone and the River Crossing facility, individuals and families in north Alabama can find the support they need, when they need it, right in their own community.”

Since detox is usually the starting point toward longer-term treatment, River Crossing works closely with River Valley Recovery Center, WellStone’s16-bed residential treatment center in Hazel Green, and New Horizons intensive outpatient program on Wellstone’s South Huntsville campus.

“We love that we’re able to transition our clients to River Valley or New Horizons, depending on the individual,” said Seuis. “That’s where the deeper dive into treatment begins.”
Besides admission to an inpatient or outpatient program, long-term treatment plans may include continued therapy, medication assisted treatment and psychiatric services.

But it all starts with that often-terrifying first step.
For those who take it at River Crossing, an experienced team of mental health professionals will be waiting, ready to guide them, safely and steadily, toward recovery.
“We want them to know that their sobriety is worth fighting for, and so are they,” said Seuis.

River Crossing is expected to serve 200 adults annually. Most will stay a week, but can extend to 15 days, if needed. The facility accepts private insurance, Medicaid, Medicare and self-pay clients. No client will be turned away because of an inability to pay. WellStone’s priority is providing individuals with the care they need when they need it.

41st Mid-South Woodcarving Show and Competition – Oct 31st and Nov 1st, 2025
By Paul Freeman

The North Alabama Woodcarvers Association- NAWA, established in 1981 in Huntsville, Alabama, will host the 41st Mid-South Woodcarving Show and Competition on October 31, and November 1, 2025, at Trinity United Methodist Church, 607 Airport Road, Huntsville, Alabama, from 9:00am to 4:00pm both days. The show is free to attend. Visitors can meet woodcarvers; see award-winning carvings; talk with expert careers; and join drawings for tools, carved items, and more.

The 40th show held last November was highly successful. Twenty-five carvers from across the region participated with 34 booths highlighting the skill, creativity, and passion of woodcarving. The event not only celebrated the art of woodcarving but also strengthened the bonds within the woodcarving community.

Wood carvings were judged in multiple categories in both Open and Intermediate skill levels, ensuring that woodcarvers of all levels had the opportunity to showcase their talents. Eighteen carvers entered ninety-four pieces for judging. Sixty-seven ribbons were awarded for First, Second, Third and Honorable Mention; and $1,770 in monetary awards were presented. Individual carvers displayed their award-winning carvings and ribbons to the public at their booths.

The 2025 show promises more carvers, the opportunity to see creative wood carvings, and opportunities to acquire carving supplies. We expect over 30 carvers displaying 200+ carvings like caricatures, animals, birds, Santas, bark houses, and more. Many of which will be for sale.

Attendees can sign up for free carving classes beginning January 2026. NAWA meets at Oak Park Baptist Church on Cloys Avenue NE, Huntsville. Beginners interested in learning more about woodcarving are welcome to visit for advice and assistance. Our goal is to teach tool use, safety, wood grain direction, and cutting techniques. Beginner classes vary in complexity but are enjoyable for all.

The North Alabama Woodcarvers Show and Competition continues to be a beacon of artistic excellence, drawing together individuals who share a love for the timeless art of woodcarving. NAWA looks forward to seeing you the first weekend in November 2025 for out 41st Show. For more information, visit our website at

Fantasy Playhouse Presents Cinderella
By Matthew Brown

Fantasy Playhouse Children’s Theater and Academy (FPCTA) is all geared up for its new season, “65 Years of Magic”. For more than six decades, FPCTA has brought stories to life for families across Huntsville and the North Alabama area. This landmark season promises to be one of its most memorable yet, with each production packing in as much magic as it can.

Kicking off this milestone season is a time-honored tale that offers a fresh take for new audiences: Cinderella. While the core of the story, about a kind-hearted girl who dreams of a better life for herself, remains at the center, this adaptation promises to breathe new life into this classic tale that audiences will enjoy.

Opening a season with Cinderella is no small choice. As Artistic Director Stephen Tyler Davis explains, the production was selected not only for its universal appeal but also for its thematic resonance with FPCTA’s legacy.

“I knew I wanted this season to be something truly special, something that honored the traditions and roots of a timeless fairytale classic, but also allowed me to bring my own voice and creativity to it. There’s something magical about stories that we all grew up with, stories that feel like home, and yet there’s always room to see them in a new light. For me, it was about finding that balance, holding onto the heart of the tale while adding fresh layers that speak to today’s audiences. I wanted to craft a production that feels familiar and nostalgic, but also exciting, surprising, and deeply relevant to the values of Fantasy.

“Audiences can expect the spectacle and wonder that make Cinderella a favorite across families. All those magical moments of a glittering ball, a pumpkin carriage, and the thrilling strike of midnight will still illuminate the stage. FPCTA also promises moments of surprise and innovation, with creative design choices and storytelling elements that make the production uniquely theirs. This adaptation of Cinderella blends tradition with a spark of newness that will keep both newcomers and longtime theatergoers engaged from beginning to end.

This production invites audiences of every age to dream without limits, to believe in the power of magic making, and to hold onto hope even when circumstances seem impossible. Whether you are experiencing the wonder of Cinderella for the very first time or rediscovering it with fresh eyes, FPCTA’s interpretation offers a theatrical experience that is both nostalgic and refreshingly new. With its mix of dazzling stagecraft, heartfelt performances, and a touch of musicality, this production promises not only to delight but also to set the stage for a spectacular yearlong celebration of theater.

With “65 Years of Magic” as its banner, Fantasy Playhouse Children’s Theater and Academy is inviting the community to step into a new home of magic, take a seat, and be part of a season that honors the past while looking brightly toward the future. FPCTA’s Cinderella debuts on Friday, October 17, with a limited two-weekend run. Performances are October 17-19, 24-26 at FPCTA on the Boulevard. Season Passes and individual tickets are available online at www.FantasyPlayhouse.org

Seven Bands, Student Performers at Microwave Dave Day Honoring a Local Legend
By Microwave Dave Music Education Foundation

Dave Gallaher, aka Microwave Dave, isn’t just a local musician—he’s part of Huntsville’s DNA. From weekly sets at The Nook and The Open Bottle to sharing stages with Aretha Franklin, Reba McEntire, Buddy Guy and Lynyrd Skynyrd, he’s proven himself a Huntsville institution for more than four decades.

In 2015, Microwave Dave Day was created in his honor and resulted in him receiving a key to the city. This year, the 11th Annual Microwave Dave Day will be held on Sunday, October 19 from 3-9 pm at Lumberyard Huntsville, 108 Cleveland Ave., Huntsville, featuring seven bands, a student stage, food trucks and kids activities. All activities are free.

Dave’s desire to become a musician began in fourth grade while watching a Dixieland Jazz band at his school. Instantly entranced, he launched his musical journey. With the impact of that day, music in schools has never been far from Dave’s heart and he has performed in schools since the 1970s. This is the reason why he lends his name to the Microwave Dave Music Education Foundation (MDMEF),a non-profit offering music education programs in North Alabama. Microwave Dave Day serves as its main fundraiser, including Concerts in the Classroom and the Danny Hall Music Scholarship.

Dave brings a collection of guitars to every gig, including a cigar box guitar. He started playing cigar box guitar in 2001, after he saw Richard Johnston win the solo act at the International Blues Challenge playing a unique instrument built by John Lowe. Dave bought his own “Lowebow,” adding it to his rotation.

In 2005, Huntsville had its first World's Longest-Running Cigar Box Guitar Festival - Huntsville, Alabama, where Dave, among others, performed. The event has had many organizers and performers, but Dave has been a fixture at every Festival. In 2021, Jeff and Tara Mello became the Festival organizers, after purchasing The Cigar Box Guitar Store, located at Lowe Mill, from the Nickel family. The Mellos have shifted the Festival’s focus to showcase the wide variety of genres that can be played on cigar box guitar and to raise money for music education. This year the event raised $15,000 for MDMEF.

“Because of the incredible generosity of our community, we’ve been able to expand our programs, touch more lives, and welcome a managing director who will help carry this vision forward with us,” said Jessica Bolling, MDMEF Board President.

For Concerts in the Classroom, local musicians create lesson plans based on academic standards, and then become teachers for a day, mixing music with learning. Each program concludes with an open discussion, giving youngsters the opportunity to ask questions and interact individually.

The Danny Hall Music Scholarship provides one year of music lessons for aspiring young musicians. Applicants complete a form and provide one letter of recommendation to be entered into a random drawing each quarter.

Visit www.MicrowaveDaveMEF.org for info about the event, as well as Concerts in the Classroom, to submit applications for the Danny Hall Music Scholarship and for other scholarships and grants. Dave’s show schedule is posted weekly at Facebook.com/MDandNukes

The Microwave Dave Music Education Foundation (MDMEF) is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) devoted to the integration of music with learning by bringing musicians into the classroom

Java has been waiting far too long for someone to truly see him. Every day, this handsome boy greets the world with hope — that today might finally be the day his forever family walks through the door.

Look at him: that beautiful coat, that warm smile, those soulful eyes. Java isn’t just handsome — he’s incredible. He’s smart, eager to learn, and always ready to show off his tricks (especially if treats are involved). He loves walks, playtime, and exploring the outdoors with someone by his side.

Java also has a story of survival. He’s faced challenges, undergone medical treatment, and come out on the other side stronger, healthier, and ready to love. Now, all he needs is a family to share his second chance at life with.

What Java wants most is simple: a home, a family, and a place where he belongs.
