My mission is to provide ear candy for the enlightened listener, as I recreate the halcyon days of underground radio. I was lucky enough to grow up when underground radio first manifested itself in the Cleveland area. Doc Nemo of WZAK, and Martin Perlich’s, project on WCLV were the originators of underground radio, before WMMS existed. They were on a few hours a week, late at night when no one was
listening, but they reached out to me thru the dead of night airwaves, and gave me a musical education that was priceless. I got my start in radio in the early 70's with a radio show called Words & Music, which aired on WAUP FM, which was then the student run radio station of Akron University, before they got all fancy & became The University of Akron. After several decades of dead air, I decided to resurrect my D.J. alter-ego, Frank Incensed, with a show called Gawkers & Pedestrians. Since the year 2000, on "underground" stations in Ohio, Chicago, & Asheville N.C. I've been playing music not usually heard over the air waves in this gloomy Can-Town. Often, Gawkers & Pedestrians will have a general theme, say Cloning for example, an l will create what I call a song sculpture, that mixes music, poetry, comedy bits, and sound bites from films, that match the general theme of the evening. Gawkers & Pedestrians airs on Fri evening at 9pm EST, with a replay on Sat. afternoon at 4pm (time approx) as well as on demand. Other times I just "kitchen sink" it, & play anything & everything from rock, punk, hip hop, funk, old skool soul, techno, jazz, blues, classical, opera, folk, poetry, skronk, what have you. I take all those diverse ingredients, & mix them into a musical genre defying musical gumbo that will tickle your auditory nerves. Taking the advice of my musical mentor, Frank Zappa, who used to say, Kill Ugly Radio,I strive to create the most unique mix of music you will ever hear. So tune in and find out why they call me The Jah of Genre.
