Our son Micah turned 16 this week and is growing up into a man of good character and wisdom. He’s the hands and feet of chicken/turkey shepherding and he’s a big reason why our poultry have experienced very low predation/mortality/sickness and produce very high levels of customer satisfaction at dinner time! He also helps me build temporary fences for rotation grazing the cattle and he’s a champion gate opener/closer among many other jobs involving the cattle that he helps me accomplish. I’m thankful for my family and for all of you because without you Micah would not have had these opportunities to work and learn at the same capacity that a profitable farm provides.

In China, they discovered a huge underground forest at 192 meters deep that could have species unknown to science. The ancient trees growing there are almost 40 meters tall.

Feeding cows in deep snow yesterday was kind of fun. It’s been a couple of years since we’ve had a snow fall like this. Usually the winters have presented mud as the biggest challenge. Mud is much more unpleasant and unsightly than snow. It’s why we typically keep the cattle on wood chips pads in the winter. Most of the cattle are on wood chips pads now but the group of cows and calves is still out on pasture because the ground was not supersaturated before this snow and now the snow is protecting the sod from being ripped up by the cattle’s hooves and my tractor’s tires. After the snow melts I will probably need to get this last group of cattle on to a wood chip pad too.
