In the early 1900s, southwest Louisiana earned the title ‘Duck Capital of America.’ Towns like Gueydan and Kaplan became legendary as hunters traveled from across the country to experience the unmatched waterfowling in the rice fields and marshes. Our rich hunting traditions were born from this golden era.

Before plastic, foam, and motion spinners, some old-school waterfowlers relied on the real thing—live duck decoys. Birds were kept, cared for, and gently tethered out front so their natural movement, splash, and calling would pull in wary flocks that wouldn’t finish over a spread of carved blocks alone. It was work: feeding, penning, transporting, clipping wings or using light tethers—but the realism was unbeatable, and the stories from that era are legendary. The practice was eventually outlawed under federal migratory bird regulations, so today it lives on mostly in old photos, family tales, and the memories passed down at duck camp.

Remembering Macon Fry... Guardian of the Mississippi Flyway

Macon Fry wasn’t your average duck hunter—he was a storyteller, historian, and swamp dweller who chronicled Louisiana’s wild places and the people who lived in harmony with them.

Living off-grid on the Mississippi River batture just outside New Orleans, Fry hunted, fished, and wrote about the vanishing culture of Louisiana’s water-based life. His book, “They Called Us River Rats,” is a heartfelt tribute to the old-school ways that define our state’s duck camps and backwater stories.

While not a famous guide or champion caller, Fry’s voice captured the soul of Louisiana duck hunting—its traditions, people, and changing landscapes.

His words remind us: duck season is more than limits—it’s legacy.
