🎙️Why is nickel so popular globally and in demand, and who are the largest producers?

🌍 Why is Nickel the Darling of the Global World?

1. The Key to Future Energy High-grade nickel (Class 1) is the main material in lithium-ion batteries → used for electric vehicles (EVs), energy storage, and gadgets. Without nickel, batteries would be more expensive, heavier, and have lower energy capacity.

2. Energy Transition & Net Zero The world is shifting from fossil fuels to clean energy. EV demand is surging → automatically driving up nickel demand.

3. Stainless Steel Industry About 70% of the world's nickel is still used for stainless steel → an important material for construction, household appliances, automotive, and infrastructure.

4. Versatile & Strategic Metal Rust-resistant, strong, heat-resistant → used for aircraft, gas turbines, electronics, and military applications. This makes it a "dual-use" commodity (civilian & military), increasing its strategic importance.

🏭 Who are the world's largest nickel producers? (2024) Based on the latest data:

1. 🇮🇩 Indonesia → the world's largest producer (more than 50% of global supply). Has the largest nickel reserves. Focus on downstream processing: smelters, stainless steel, EV batteries.

2. 🇵🇭 Philippines → second-largest producer. Exports heavily to China.

3. 🇷🇺 Russia → one of the top-tier nickel producers (Norilsk Nickel).

4. 🇦🇺 Australia → large reserves, exports to global industry.

5. 🇨🇦 Canada → historically a pioneer in the nickel industry, still an important player.

Conclusion: Nickel has become a global favorite because: It is important for stainless steel (modern industry).Strategic for EV batteries & energy transition. Indonesia is now the world's nickel king thanks to abundant reserves + downstreaming policies.

🎙️Why Global Coal Prices
Are Surging Higher?

Here’s why global coal prices are climbing:
Main Drivers Behind the Surge in Coal Prices

1. Robust Demand from Key Markets (Especially China) China’s soaring imports: In August 2025, seaborne thermal coal imports to China surged to around 25.6 million metric tons, the highest monthly volume since December 2024—an increase of 12.6% from July. This spike is largely due to domestic production constraints (such as safety inspections and resource depletion), compelling China to rely on foreign supply for energy security

Wholesale dependence: China consumes over 50% of global coal and burns about one-third of the world’s coal supply in its power plants. Even slight shifts in Chinese demand wield outsized influence on global prices

2. Supply Disruptions & Constraints

Domestic production bottlenecks: Constraints in China's own coal output—stemming from safety inspections, depletion of resources, and operational limits—have hindered supply.

Geopolitical shifts: Russian coal exports have declined under Western sanctions (down about 6% in 2024) and reoriented toward Asian markets.

Seasonal and weather-related supply shocks: Events like flooding, maintenance shutdowns during the monsoon in India, or disruptions due to extreme weather (e.g., polar vortexes) can sharply limit coal supply and push prices up.

3. Fuel Switching Driven by Rising Natural Gas Prices

Gas-to-coal substitution: Elevated natural gas prices—especially in Europe and Asia—are prompting utilities to revert to cheaper coal-fired generation, increasing coal demand.

U.S. trend: In 2025’s first half, U.S. coal demand rose by about 10%, driven by strong electricity needs and higher natural gas costs.

4. Elevated Global Demand and Delayed Transition to Renewables

Record-high consumption: Global coal usage hit a historic high of around 8.8 billion tonnes in 2024, marking a 1.5% increase from 2023.

Strong demand in emerging regions: India, Indonesia, and Vietnam continue to ramp up coal use to meet rapid growth in energy demand. Coal remains central to their energy strategy.

Investment limitations: ESG pressure and capital constraints are delaying new coal projects, reducing medium-term supply potential—even as demand remains robust.

5. Broader Commodity Price Pressures

Commodity supercycle influences: Coal prices remain buoyed by broader structural trends, including the lingering effects of pandemic-era demand surges, labor disruptions, and financial flows typical of commodity booms.

Factor Effect on Coal Prices

Chinese demand surge Drives global price increases amidst tight supply
Production constraints In China and shale limitations reduce supply
High natural gas prices Encourages fuel switching to coal
Rising demand in emerging economies Sustains strong consumption
Delayed energy transition Slows down demand decline despite renewables growth
External shocks Weather, geopolitics, and disruptions create volatility.

🎙️ How Can We Keep the World Breathing and Protect the Future with Forests?

That’s a powerful question 🌍🌱. Forests are often called the "lungs of the Earth" because they absorb carbon dioxide, release oxygen, and regulate the planet’s climate. To keep the world breathing and safeguard the future, we can focus on a mix of conservation, restoration, and sustainable use:

🌳 1. Protect What We Have

Stop deforestation: Enforce laws against illegal logging and land clearing.

Defend primary forests: Old-growth forests store the most carbon and shelter irreplaceable biodiversity.

Strengthen Indigenous rights: Indigenous communities often protect forests better than governments or companies.

🌱 2. Restore What We’ve Lost

Reforestation: Planting trees in deforested areas with native species.

Afforestation: Establishing forests where none existed before.

Forest corridors: Reconnecting fragmented forests so wildlife can move and ecosystems thrive.

🌍 3. Use Forests Wisely

Sustainable forestry: Harvesting wood in ways that allow forests to regenerate.

Agroforestry: Mixing trees with crops to improve soil, water, and biodiversity.

Reduce paper & palm oil demand: Choosing recycled or certified products (like FSC).

đź’ˇ 4. Reduce Human Pressure

Shift diets: Lower meat consumption reduces demand for land conversion.

Cut carbon emissions: Climate change worsens wildfires, droughts, and pest outbreaks in forests.

Eco-friendly cities: Designing greener cities reduces the need to clear new land.

🌏 5. Inspire Global Action

Education & awareness: The more people understand forest value, the stronger the support.

Climate finance: Support projects that pay communities to preserve forests.

Global cooperation: Forests like the Amazon, Congo Basin, and Borneo are vital for the whole world, not just one nation.

👉 In short: Protect. Restore. Use wisely. Live sustainably. "If forests thrive, humanity thrives—because they don’t just help us breathe, they regulate water, soil, climate, and even medicine
