Finders Keepers Records Collaborations with well known creative types like The Gaslamp Killer, David Holmes, Gruff Rhys, Pamela des Barres, Jarvis Cocker, Maxine Peake, St.

Behold Finders Keepers, a British record label, 40 years in the making, introducing fans of psychedelic/jazz/folk/funk/avant-garde and whacked-out movie musak to a lost world of undiscovered vinyl artifacts from the annals of alternative pop history. Nearly two decades old, Finders Keepers Records, as an active independent archival collective, could arguably stand up as one of the most experienced

music institutions operating in the realms of what some still call “The Record Industry”. With a discography of sounds that span over sixty calendar years from over forty different countries the “company” (that we prefer to consider as a society) managed to quickly redefine its original perception as a simple reissue label within its first fledgling months by digging deeper into global pop history – liberating years of previously unreleased music and personifying, re-establishing and integrating lost artists into a fresh, sociable, alternative musical landscape. In reality the founders of Finders Keepers have been releasing independent records (as in the round plastic things) for over twenty years (a longer lifespan than most major label executives) and been involved in over one thousand releases in a wide range of multidisciplinary capacities. Still manned on a daily basis by its founding members, Finders Keepers was formed with frontline experience gleaned from Andy Votel’s fiercely independent Twisted Nerve Records (Badly Drawn Boy’s first label) combined with Doug Shipton’s experience at Cherry Red Records (DIY pioneers). Abetted with reputations as multi-faceted DJs, designers, writers, radio presenters, record producers and above all obscure vintage record collectors Shipton and Votel combined forces on a short-run commissioned label called Delay 68 before branching out alone under the name Finders Keepers (a moniker taken from an acclaimed Votel world psych compilation from the mid-1990s). With commitment, constancy and longevity as one of their leading attributes the Finders Keepers team have managed to garner a reputation of integrity, deep knowledge and quality unrivalled by a growing influx of contenders of whom FK and its global family pre-date and often outlast. Etienne, Malcolm Mooney and Belle & Sebastian stand as flattering testimonies to our catalogue and projects with kindred labels like Now Again, Sublime Frequencies, Stargate, Roundtable, Fat City and Paradise Bangkok echo a mutual respect for the those willing to get their hands dirty. Meanwhile, hip hop artists like Mad Lib, Erykha Badu and members of The Wu Tang Clan take welcome plunders into our sample bank and DJ jaunts with Edan, Demdike Stare, Cut Chemist, Cherrystones, Egon and Elijah Wood make weekends more enjoyable. With a virtually unblinkered approach to “original” music Finders Keepers defies and redefines genres from one release to the next, pre-empting record collector trends and recontextualising music from disparate locations uniting lost music and found artists most of which sound more current and challenging than today’s most experimental heroes. Expanding the parameters of its original psychedelic/global funk module, Finders Keepers now boasts a range of essential sub-labels under its well-travelled wings, including a dedicated new wave/disco/punk label called Cache Cache and a pre-pop avant/jazz/noise label called Cacophonic. In the interests of consistency, Finders Keepers still balances its penchant for failed and misunderstood European pop music AND untravelled/condemned psych rock from the East with contemporary output on Twisted Nerve, Battered Ornaments and specifically feminine oriented Bird records (run by established songwriter Jane Weaver). Other than that, if you just want records with “heavy drums and electronic effects” or “Czech soundtracks”, well, you’ve come to the right place too. Quite unlike any other archival labels before us Finders Keepers also boasts what could be described as a “label roster” with many multiple LP releases of lost music from repeat artists who have in time become trusted friends. Atari music composer Suzanne Ciani, Gainsbourg collaborator Jean-Claude Vannier, Swiss electronic pioneer Bruno Spoerri, Polish soundtracker Andrzej Korzynski, French conceptual disco monster Jean-Pierre Massiera and many more almost form an alternative historical musical universe that never quite existed the first time round. Needless to say all of these collaborative friendships have readily led to live interactions and theatrical performances including the very first-ever stage show of Serge Gainsbourg’s Histoire De Melody Nelson (with original orchestrator and rhythm section) Vannier’s L’Enfant Assassin Des Mouche, Spoerri’s Lilith and Massiera’s Horrific Child (not to mention associated studio collaborations and improvised tours). The legacy preservation of other Finders Keepers artists has had further cultural impact via the media. The label’s committed series of Welsh protest pop music from the early 70s lead to a primetime BBC documentary called Free Wales Harmony (presented by Andy Votel) telling the first hand stories of a previously undocumented political movement where pop music successfully led to political reform for a minority culture. Our releases of unknown and banned pre-revolution Iranian pop music was also met with great critical acclaim and our ongoing series of untravelled music from communist Hungary, Poland and Czechoslovakia shares discography space with the lost cinematic music of Lollywood and Kollywood for these first time pressings. Catering to the music lovers, the DJs, the collectors and inquisitive minds alike, Finders Keepers’ commitment to facsimile vinyl editions (mastered from the most authentic sources) as well as CD and digital releases with extensive sleeve notes can range from limited runs of one hundred cassettes to releases that continue to be re-pressed into the thousands without slowing down… the ideal Finders Keepers music is timeless and continues to resonate regardless of its release date, and hopefully we will say the same in coming months about our scheduled DVDs, spoken word records and books (our previous release of the original 1966 Wicker Man story Ritual is another high point thus far). For many onlookers, on paper, Finders Keepers shouldn’t work. Lost or misunderstood records in foreign languages with no available market research make for risky business… But if the record fits this bill, FK is generally the perfect home, providing a new context and a positive environment for good music, regardless of its background or cloudy history. Our modus operandi “Making Global Music Local” and “Breaking Boundaries Before Breaking Even” clearly illustrate Finders Keepers’ ongoing commitment to the artists we believe in, and on behalf of the listener and the musician Finders Keepers will keep digging deeper channels to connect your equally adventurous minds and help those around us to do the same. As corny as it sounds, it’s a family. Previously referred to as “an accidental world music label with a punk attitude”, Finders Keepers strive to continue to cross pollinate strains of music from genre-less pop cultures, constructing new vantage points and even trying to right some of the wrongs made by the archaic music industry the first time round. Assuming the role of the librarian, the janitor and the music teacher, while keeping a close eye on the lost property box. A decade later, Finders Keepers has learned that it’s nicer to share.

La Morte Vivante, lycanthropes, freaks, geeks, ancient warlocks, fresh-maggots, spectres, Exorcised-rectors and bloody nuns… please form an orderly queue!!! It’s that HORRID time of year where Finders Keepers bosses wince behind our cushions and watch you cold hearted bloodsuckers break in to our tombs and pillage the vinyl-village for everything its worth!!! You don’t need a seance or a ouija board to raise the DEADSTOCK throughout the month of October, and you also won’t have to sell-your-soul to raise the asking price of pitiful runes to participate. Prices have been SLASHED beyond reason or recognition. To be FRANK you’ll be SHOCKED at how low we have stooped for this years sale! Its the WORST YET! Its DISGUSTING. Quick RUNNNN!!!! Like we’ve said many times before, there’s actually not such thing as Deadstock at Finders Keepers Records, it’s all very much “Living”, or better still immortal. BUT as fans of the label know our INSANE release schedule and bloodthirsty penchant for tenuously terrifying lost-pop and resurrected rock often means it occasionally gets a bit cramped in the FK mausoleum and our international cast of characters start bumping into each other like Zombies-at-dawn in an infested shopping mall. You get the picture. If we were to stand to trail at a weekend witchhunt the bloody judge would be the first to testify that THIS IS OUR BEST SALE YET. We need to exorcize our demons quick before the offer mysteriously evaporates. So sing it from the clock towers and belfrys with burning stakes in hand (tell your friends / fiends)… “Fly my pretties, FLY!!!!”

The very first Buchla synthesiser performance by revolutionary composer Suzanne Ciani finally makes its fifty year journey from its switch-on New York art gallery to its long deserved and discerning global phonographic audience.

With this previously unheard vinyl pressing, Finders Keepers Records are proud to present an archival project of ‘art music’ that not only redefines musical history but lays genuine claim to the overused buzzwords such as pioneering, maverick, experimental, groundbreaking and esoteric, while questioning social politics and the evolution of music technology as we have come to understand it. To describe Italian-American composer Suzanne Ciani’s resurrected Buchla concert records as genuine gamechangers would be a gross understatement. These records represent a musical revolution, an artistic revelation, a scientific benchmark and a trophy in the cabinet of counterculture creativity. This sonic installation album, alongside her recently liberated WBAI/Phill Niblock 1975 sessions (FKR082), are triumphant yardsticks in the synthesiser space race and the untold story of the first woman on the proverbial musical moon. While pondering the early accolades attached to these golden era New York recordings it’s daunting to learn that these records were in fact not even records at all.

What exists on this disc now was a manifesto and a one-time gateway to a new world, which somehow was only partially pushed ajar. Captured here is a genuine live act exploring new territories with a fully performable music instrument. If the unfamiliar, modernistic, melodic pulses, tones and harmonics found on these 1970’s artistic gallery collaborations/live presentations (then soon to be followed by academic grant applications and educational demonstrations) had been placed in a phonographic context alongside the widely marketed work of Morton Subotnick, Walter Carlos or Tomita, then the name Suzanne Ciani and her infectious influence would have already radically changed the shape, sound and gender of our record.

With the light of Buchla and Ciani’s initial flame Finders Keepers continues the journey through the vaults of this increasingly celebrated music legacy, illuminating these ‘non-records’ that evaded the limelight for almost half a century. You can’t write history when you are too busy making it. With fresh ink in the bottomless well, let’s start at the beginning. Again.

Out 2nd August. Pre-order now.

As one of the three inaugural 1976 releases to ignite the mythical Mustevic Music catalogue, David Wertman’s elusive Kara Suite LP was the first record to turn jazz drummer Steve Reid’s vanity imprint into a bona fide cooperative record label with a multi-artist repertoire. Entrusting his own bass player with the limelight, Reid’s unlikely A&R decision would typify his oblique strategies and challenge the common perception of a soloist within jazz’s shifting landscape.

Drawing few comparisons amongst independent label releases of the time, save for rare standalone LP by Ronnie Boykins (ESP 1975) and cellist Abdul Wadoud (Bisharra 1978), Wertman’s only solo album (preceding his work with Sun Ensemble and The New Life Trio) combined frenetic bow work, intricate spiritual exchanges and raucous rock solid cyclic riffage to underpin his own compositional complexities. Providing a platform for first-time players like Richard Schatzberg (French horn) and future avant jazz punk participant Ken Simon (tenor/soprano sax) Kara Suite provides an early indication of Wertman’s multilayered and non-conformist blueprint from which the hallowed New Life Trio would eventually illuminate. The album’s off-kilter commitment is further cemented by the inclusion of worldly free jazz luminary Charles Tyler (alto sax) and the naturalistic back-beat of Steve Reid himself to complete the dream team – albeit a sleepless one, on account of this one-off quintet’s wide-eyed innovation.

Presented in four parts, Kara Suite documents Wertman’s very first musical directorial commitment to vinyl, preceded only by guest appearances, months earlier, on Steve Reid’s classic Rhythmatism and the ultra-rare The Universal Jazz Symphonette LP which chronicles Wertman’s deep-end New York baptism alongside Billy Bang and Earl Freeman before his relocation to Northampton forged this unique and oblique chapter in America’s independent jazz narrative. As one of the final pages to be turned in the Mustevic reappraisal legacy this album perhaps remains the best kept secret for aficionados who actively choose to blur the lines between spiritual jazz and free jazz with no discrimination against art rock and the genre that might soon be christened punk (but not as we know it).

Finally resurrected via the Finders Keepers/Early Future unison, complete with full cooperation and sleeve note narration by David’s partner Lynne Meryl, it might come as little surprise that amongst these pillars of alternative, privately pressed jazz is a story that also intertwines names such as Alice Cooper, Archie Shepp, KISS and DJ Shadow and many mutating musical genres that have made this music so hard to pin down over the subsequent five decades.

Available to pre-order through the Finders Keepers website and Bandcamp on 3pm (BST) Friday 6th October.
