In case you had us on your radar: Our deadline for all categories, contest and non-contest, is May 31. Contest categories: prose poem, flash fiction, flash creative nonfiction. Non-contest categories: poetry (all types), fiction and creative nonfiction (flash to 5,000-word max).

$8 fee for contest. Never a fee for non-contest—but if you donate $5, we send you a big list of writing prompts.

Contest prizes are $400 in each category. All entries considered for publication with payment at our regular rate of $50.

Congratulations to BR contributor Amy Muia (fall 2017 issue), winner of the 2024 Flannery O'Connor Award for Short Fiction! Looking forward to reading all the stories in this collection as soon as it's available.

Super pleased to announce that Pamela Painter will serve as the final judge for our summer contest (flash fiction, flash creative nonfiction, prose poem categories).

Pamela Painter is the author of five story collections, Getting to Know the Weather, The Long and Short of It, Wouldn't You Like to Know, Ways to Spend the Night and Fabrications: New and Selected Stories.
