“It was the best thing in my entire life I ever got to be a part of.” — Jo Harvey Allen

In Part 2, Terry and Jo Harvey talk about Ghost Ship Rodez — a piece that arrived at the right time and carried more weight than either of them expected.

Inspired by Antonin Artaud’s years in Rodez, the play took on a life of its own, finding them as much as they found it.

Our latest Americana Podcast episode release: Part 2 of the conversation with Robert Earl Keen and Terry and Jo Harvey Allen.

Their contribution to art, theater, music, and poetry is unmatched.

From the beginning of their love affair—which began at ages 10 and 11 in the 1950s—to their most recent acting credits in Martin Scorsese’s blockbuster Killers of the Flower Moon, their story is so deep and wide that for the first time on Americana Podcast, we had to break our show into two segments.

Although Jo Harvey and Terry were born and spent their early years in Lubbock, Texas, their artistry and story begin with a coin toss that took them to Southern California.

It was in L.A. where Terry refined his skills as an artist, a songwriter, and a playwright—while Jo Harvey, on a whim, became the first female voice anywhere on the first underground radio show in America.

Rawhide and roses, word of their talent and synchronicity spread, moving them from L.A. to Berkeley and then Fresno, California, where Terry settled in as artist-in-residence.

The two started and raised a family; however, their artistry and fame could not be held in check, and soon they were on the go again.

Part two of our show reveals a turn of events that only happens in fairy tales.

Purely by accident, Terry picked up a book in the City Lights bookstore in San Francisco.

Lawrence Ferlinghetti was working the cash register, and although Terry hadn’t a penny to his name, Ferlinghetti gave him the book—which sent he and Jo Harvey on a worldwide trek to search for the staff of Jesus.

Our latest episode is, in the simplest terms, a love story—but not the kind pulled from a bookstore shelf. This one’s rooted in something deeper: a love of a person, a way of life, and a lifelong relationship with art.

Told in the wide-open style of West Texas, it’s filled with sandstorms, sunsets, and the kind of desert flowers that bloom when no one expects them to.

At its heart are Terry and Jo Harvey Allen—two artists who’ve built a life and legacy that blur the lines between the personal and the creative.

Live at Slim’s in San Francisco, 2018—Terry Allen firing off “Amarillo Highway,” the hard-edged anthem that’s been riding with him since Lubbock (On Everything) in ’79.

First cut by Bobby Bare and later covered by Robert Earl Keen, it’s Allen’s version that turned the song into a touchstone of outlaw country—swaggering, satirical, and pure West Texas grit.
