"One Another - A Series On Relationships"
Episode 1: Addressing one another through music
“And be not drunk with wine, for that is debauchery, but be filled with the Spirit, addressing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody to the Lord with your heart, giving thanks always and for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ..” Ephesians 5:18-20 ESV
“Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankfulness in your hearts to God.” Colossians 3:16 ESV
Christian music plays an important role in worship and in ministering to one another in Christ. Secular music, the music of this world, does not do that. The Apostle Paul in both his letters to the Ephesians and Colossians writes of music that ministers to believers spiritually. Christian based music is an important part of our relationship to one another. It is not to glorify man but to glorify God. One of the results of being filled with the Spirit of God should be our desire to minister to others in the church. One of the ways to do this is by music. Whether we address one another by participating in a praise and worship team, or in a choir or singing with others in congregational worship, we can be involved.
Music is a way of teaching spiritual truth. It is a means of admonishing –that is, giving counsel or warning. It’s a way of building up one another in the faith. It does not require well-trained voices nor professionalism. It’s what comes from a Spirit filled heart and a genuine love for God and others.
One other thing to keep in mind is that music can also be a way of personal worship as we sing and make melody in our hearts unto the Lord as an expression of our thanks to him.
