Cheers to the weirdos, the misfits, and the rebels!

Let's face it, we all judge to some degree.
Whether it's a quick first impression or a strong opinion developed over a period of time, we can't help it.

You may find yourself unwillingly (possibly unfairly) shoved into a box of someone else's opinion, and that can be really uncomfortable.

Actually, it can downright suck.

I've spent days, months, even freaking YEARS trying to change someone's opinion of me, and no matter how I tried, I either
A) stayed firmly planted in the same sh*tty box
B) put in tons of effort to escape the box for a very brief time only to be tossed right back in at the first chance

Here's the thing about other people's boxes and labels that they assign to you...
It's not really about you.

We all change, grow, evolve.

I'm not the person I was a year ago, let alone 10 years ago.

Stressing and torturing myself to bust out of these boxes was like carrying a huge, heavy, real life box around all day every day. It was labeled with my name, so it must be filled with all of my crap - right?!?

WRONG!

It was full of their crap! I didn't ask for it! I didn't want it!
So why the heck was I carrying it around for them?
And why are you continuing to carry around someone else's crap?

Here is your permission to stop the shame and 💥 drop the box!

We all have things we get to work on or figure out how to make work for us.
That's for you to figure out.

Be your strange, colorful, crazy, and messy self, and just keep growing.

Unwelcome, unimpressive, and ineffective.

In a digital world, screens can start to feel like armor.
There's a certain amount of brazen audacity that bubbles up within us and empowers us to say things online that we're too chicken to say in person.

When we spend so much time online and share so much of ourselves on social media, those digital spaces can start to feel like an extension of our personal space. Inviting someone into your digital sphere can be as intimate as inviting them into your home.

So how would you feel if someone knocked on your door, and you opened it to see a sales person immediately jumping into their pitch?

🤢🤮

In the words of Simon Cowell, it's a no for me.

In the vast digital world, we still appreciate genuine connections.
Here are 3 tips to utilize DM's effectively and break free of this icky and ineffective tactic (that is, quite frankly, a waste of everyone's time).

1. Make the connection your priority.
If you go straight for the sale, you're basically screaming that you don't actually give a crap about this person, and likely to get blocked.

2. Get permission before sending that very first DM.
Remember on Friends when Joey worked at the department store spraying perfume? He had to ask before spraying anyone. When he got into a standoff with the new guy for a prime spot on the floor, the new guy ended up spraying someone without permission and got him right in the eye. He got fired for it. Don't spray without permission.

3. Be interestED, not interestING.
Engagement is a two way street, and going out of your way to tell someone what you appreciated about their post last Tuesday or asking what they use to design their graphics because they're so eye catching is more likely to open up a conversation. Be an active listener, and then create a back and forth dialog.
