On February 18, 2025 a tailings dam at Sino Metals Leach in Chambishi burst, releasing about 50 million litres of acidic, metal-laced waste into the Mwambashi stream and Kafue River.
The discharge contained cyanide and heavy metals like arsenic and uranium, causing immediate fish kills, scorched crops and emergency water shutdowns in Kitwe.

The danger doesn’t end there: heavy metals settle into sediments, enter food chains, and can poison fish, crops and people for decades. Groundwater may remain unsafe long after headlines fade.

Children and pregnant mothers are the most at risk today!

Even the U.S. Embassy issued health alerts and evacuated its staff from affected Copperbelt areas. Why does it seem foreign missions act faster for their people than we act for our own citizens and land? Why is there so little national outrage?

This is about justice, health, and holding extractive companies to account.

We will not let a river be killed and silence follow. Speak up, mobilize, and insist our government protect people not profits.
