I recorded Mastodon live in NYC in March 2001 before they signed to Relapse, released Remission and begun their ascent to becoming one of the biggest and greatest metal/rock bands of our time.
I'd never heard them before, just got a hunch watching them load in that they were going to be good, and they were.
The recording is rough, but it's a cool time capsule into a brief window of time when a band destined for greatness was still finding their feet, touring the DIY circuit and opening up a $5 matinee at ABC No Rio.
This is a moment from "the before times" in so many ways, and with the recent passing of the legendary Brent Hinds I figured some people may like to hear this. Enjoy:
