The Howard County Sheriff's Office is mourning the shocking and tragic loss of an off-duty deputy who was shot and killed in Baltimore last night. Deputy Ryan Demby was in a bar around midnight when a verbal argument broke out between other patrons. During the altercation, shots were fired and Deputy Demby was struck. The Baltimore Police Department is actively investigating the incident. Our hearts are broken for the Demby family, Ryan's friends and colleagues, and our entire sheriff's office family. We will continue to keep our community updated and are grateful for your support during this difficult time.

Earlier today, we announced that Howard County was alerted by the Baltimore City Department of Public Works that during a routine test of the Druid Lake Reservoirs, low levels of the microscopic parasite Cryptosporidium were discovered (see https://publicworks.baltimorecity.gov/news/press-releases/2023-09-28-dpw-detects-low-levels-cryptosporidium-during-routine-testing-druid for Baltimore City DPW's announcement).

Due to the low-risk, most residents do not need to take any additional precautions unless they have an immunocompromising condition. Those with immunocompromising conditions and other sensitive populations are advised to: drink bottled water, boil water for one minute before consuming or filter tap water.

After further investigation, because of the way water is stored and redistributed once received from the City, out of an abundance of caution, Howard County may see a larger impact than initially anticipated, as indicated on this map. Our team is in the process of testing our distribution stations to evaluate the levels of contamination in Howard County. We hope to have results from the testing within seven to ten business days.
