TRACKING THE TROPICS: After several weeks of silence, we are now getting into the prime of our tropical season. A tropical wave off the west coast of Africa has a 40% (moderate) chance for development over the next 5 days. This is up 20% from the low, 20% chance we had yesterday, so it is gaining energy rather quickly. This disturbance is producing disorganized showers and thunderstorms and is within an environment that is very favorable for gradual development over the next few days. A tropical depression could form by the middle/end of this week. We are closely monitoring this disturbance as it progresses westward towards the US, and will provide updates as the forecast develops.

07/08/2022

Happy Sunday! Winding down the weekend with hit or miss showers that are dying down as we go into the evening. We are tracking the tropics with a disturbance off the west coast of Africa that is producing disorganized showers and storms and gradually developing day by day. A tropical depression could form with this system by the middle/later part of the week. High pressure to our east will bring the heat and the chance for isolated showers and storms for the next several days. More details tonight on WWAY at 6 & 11 PM.

06/08/2022

Happy Saturday! Mostly sunny skies with minimal rain chances for today. We'll have a better chance for showers and storms tomorrow morning, but clearing out as the day goes on. We do have a disturbance in the tropics that has a low chance for development right now, but certainly something we are keeping an eye on. Into next week, we will stay consistent with the chance for a shower or storm each afternoon and highs in the 90s.

31/07/2022

Happy Sunday! Scattered showers and storms developing this afternoon to wind down the weekend. Into next week, heat indices are forecasted to exceed 100 degrees some days. Rain chances are lower for the most part, but a pop up shower or storm cannot be ruled out for each afternoon. More details coming up tonight at 6 and 11 PM on WWAY News.

30/07/2022

Happy Saturday! A cold front dropping into the area this weekend will provide increased shower and storm activity this afternoon and into Sunday. Next week, storms will become more isolated in coverage and temperatures will stay put in the 90s.

24/07/2022

Happy Sunday! A beautiful end to the weekend with plenty of sunshine across the Cape Fear. Into next week, we will see lower chances for scattered showers and storms, but still have that chance for some pop up storms throughout each afternoon along with temperatures in the 90s.

23/07/2022

Happy Saturday! Showers and storms will move through portions of the Cape Fear this morning and into the early afternoon, but we will see some clearing after lunchtime. No change in the weather patter for the next several days is expected, just our typical July weather with showers and storms possible each afternoon along with temps in the 90s and high humidity.

17/07/2022

A beautiful end to our Sunday! Although, the chance for showers and storms will increase through the overnight and into tomorrow. High pressure building in from the west will lead to hotter temps this week, but fewer storms.

16/07/2022

Showers and storms last through the weekend as an area of low pressure remains over the Carolina Piedmont. Into next week, we will stay stuck in that typical afternoon summer time pattern with the chance for showers and storms each afternoon. Temperatures will get back into the 90s with high humidity as well.

10/07/2022

A slow moving cold front to our north will bring showers and storms throughout the afternoon and continue through the evening and overnight. On and off showers expected through tomorrow morning then turning into scattered storms in the afternoon.

09/07/2022

Happy Saturday! Showers and storms likely through the afternoon and into Sunday due to a slow moving cold front to our north. High temperatures will be a bit cooler going into tomorrow, but unfortunately that humidity is going to stick around.

SEVERE THUNDERSTORM WARNING: The National Weather Service has issued a Severe Thunderstorm Warning for New Hanover, Pender, and Brunswick counties until 5:45 PM. This storm is nearly stationary. Hazards include wind gusts up to 60 mph and quarter sized hail.

03/07/2022

As we go into the overnight we will see showers and storms ramp up. Showers and storms are likely in the afternoon for your Independence Day, but as we go into the evening that chance will decrease just in time for fireworks. Tropical Storm Colin is no longer a threat to the Cape Fear.

02/07/2022

EVENING TROPICAL UPDATE: Tropical Storm Colin continues to track northeast at 8 mph, with sustained winds of 35 mph, into the Cape Fear which will leave us with continued showers on and off throughout the evening. Winds are likely to pick up later tonight, but little change in strength is is expected over the next day or two. This system will move just along the coast of North Carolina through Sunday morning and then make its way out into the Atlantic and away from land by Sunday night. Dissipation of the storm is expected by Monday. For the most part, this system is more of a inconvenience to outdoor holiday plans than anything, and we will not see any severe threats or outcomes of it.

02/07/2022

AFTERNOON TROPICAL UPDATE: Tropical Storm Colin will continue to bring moderate to heavy rainfall into the Cape Fear this afternoon into Sunday morning along with gusty winds. We could see rainfall amounts up to half an inch in some areas. This system will be out of our way by tomorrow afternoon.

Metin Bereketli on the importance of trees with this painting and explanation:

"Our DNA is made of the same as the DNA of a tree. The tree breathes what we exhale. When the tree exhales, we need what the tree exhales. So we have a common destiny with the tree." -- Floyd Red Crow Westerman
