Harmony Labs Researching and reshaping our relationship with media.

We are a media research lab, using science, data, and creativity to research and reshape our relationship with media. For more than a decade, our work has helped storytellers and strategists, decision makers and dreamers, harness the immense power of media to shape a positive, pluralistic future.

How do men actually gather online? What values, attitudes, and ideas drive them? What are they looking for, and how are they affected by what they find?

ICYMI: tomorrow we’re sharing key findings on these questions in an interactive research briefing and live Q&A hosted by Harmony Labs and LinkUp Lab, an innovation hub by Equimundo and Futures Without Violence.

There’s no shortage of worry about what men are watching online. What’s missing is intelligence about what’s actually happening—grounded in men’s real media behavior and observed at the scale of the internet.

We partnered with LinkUp Lab—an innovation hub from Equimundo and Futures Without Violence—to bring that clarity: mapping men’s streaming and YouTube media consumption habits, what content resonates, and how their attitudes shape behavior.

Join us on August 5 for a virtual briefing where, for the first time, we’ll share findings from our forthcoming research report, Men’s Flourishing + Media. You’ll hear from Ahnjili Zhuparris (Senior Research Scientist, Harmony Labs), Brian Waniewski (Executive Director, Harmony Labs), Caroline Hayes (Digital Strategies, Equimundo), and Jesse Mahler (Program Manager, Futures Without Violence).

The briefing will also include a conversation with Courtney Cano, CEO and Co-Founder of , on what this research means for their work engaging young men.

Are opinions about vaccines formed primarily in the exam room? Do stories about vaccines tend to reach audiences who already feel confident? How do the media and narratives families are immersed in shape childhood vaccine confidence in the first place?

ICYMI, get first-of-their-kind findings on these questions and more in a live briefing tomorrow from Harmony Labs and The Frameworks Institute on how you can supercharge your storytelling with a values-based approach.

We ran our first two campaigns through the Narrative R&D Lab’s testing infrastructure. Across both campaigns, we learned that the content we made moved people. Just not always the people we built it for.

Grateful to our campaign partners Opportunity at Work and Groundwork Collaborative, and media partners NowThis Impact, The Warp Zone, Plus Más, BuzzFeed, ParentsTogether, and Cocoa Butter, for building and testing this work with us.

New field notes from the Narrative R&D Lab on what that gap taught us about audience fit, creator fit, and story fit—and what we’re changing going into year two: https://harmonylabs.org/news/narrative-lab-year-one

Earlier this year, we teamed up with The Frameworks Institute to understand how culture, media, and values shape childhood vaccine confidence.

Join us on Wednesday, July 29 at 2pm ET for a live briefing where we’ll share first-of-their-kind findings, actionable insights, and new ways to engage families through the narratives and media they are already immersed in.

You’ll hear from Katie Zanecchia (Strategic Partnerships Director, Harmony Labs), Rob Avruch (Director of Strategy & Practice, Harmony Labs), and Katy Evans (Senior Director, Health Justice Program, FrameWorks Institute).

Obsession and Backrooms, two of this year’s breakout horror hits from YouTube creators Curry Barker and Kane Parsons, are a reminder that creators have a rare instinct for audience-building. They know how to hold attention, speak to their communities, and turn niche content into cultural momentum.

We saw the same thing last year in advocacy when mobilized more than 15,000 creators and raised over $40 million for clean water access. The campaign reached across the internet through creators like MrBeast, Mark Rober, Alan Becker, and ViralHog.

Creator-led ecosystems are powerful, whether the goal is filling theaters or mobilizing people behind a cause.

Our case study breaks down how the campaign worked: https://harmonylabs.org/project/teamwater

Matt Fitzgerald, co-founder
Oliver Gilpin, Telos Media CEO and YouTube creator behind MrSpherical
Kelly Parsons, CEO of WaterAid America

Hosted by Harmony Labs' Kasia Cieplak-Mayr von Baldegg, the session will cover how the campaign reached a new generation of donors and what funders and advocates can learn from it.

Creators understand how to build community and have become uniquely powerful channels for reaching and activating new audiences. Creator-led, entertainment-driven fundraising offers young people an entry point into collective action.

In partnership with WaterAid America, and led by Matt Fitzgerald of fitz.partners, the campaign raised over $40M in one month to provide clean water to 2M people worldwide, mobilizing thousands of diverse creators to reach audiences across the cultural spectrum.

Kasia Cieplak-Mayr von Baldegg from Harmony Labs will sit down with the people who made this campaign possible— co-founder Matt Fitzgerald, Telos Media CEO and YouTube creator Oliver Gilpin / MrSpherical, and WaterAid CEO Kelly Parsons—to understand 's organizing model and what it says about the future of fundraising.

What does it look like to use AI to give voice to the responses of real people?

After six years of understanding not just what media is out there but what real people are actually choosing to consume and how it's affecting them, we're building a new set of audience intelligence tools on top of that data – starting with a persona and focus group tool designed to help make that knowledge accessible to far more partners and help them inhabit audiences' realities.

Here's an early look at what we're building, and why: https://harmonylabs.org/news/audience-research-increasing-utility-democratizing-access-1

"A deep story is like values tied up in a coherent syntax, an operating system that sits underneath and makes possible all the applications we interact with on the surface."

Brian Waniewski and Riki Conrey explore why the work of change isn't about rewriting people's stories, but about fitting your story inside the one they're already living.

Read how we're extracting and articulating deep stories from research findings across 13,000 respondents, combined with behavioral media data from the Narrative Observatory:

How social change interacts with the values and stories people are already living
