CJPVFD proudly announces that the State of Maryland has dedicated a portion of River Road (Maryland Route 190) in honor of former Fire Chief James P. Seavey, Sr., a lifelong public servant whose more than 43 years in the fire service shaped departments, communities, and national firefighter policy.

The dedication commemorated the stretch of River Road from the Washington, D.C. jurisdictional boundary to Falls Road in Potomac, an important corridor long served by Chief Seavey’s leadership and the fire departments he helped build.

Chief Seavey began his fire service career at age 16 as a volunteer firefighter with the Glen Echo Volunteer Fire Department. His commitment to public safety deepened over the decades as he went on to become the longest-serving Fire Chief of the Cabin John Park Volunteer Fire Department, holding the position from 1992 through 2017. Beyond his volunteer leadership, he served nearly 30 years with the District of Columbia Fire and EMS Department, retiring as a Captain.
In 2018, Chief Seavey passed away from occupational cancer that was formally recognized as a Line-of-Duty Death, reflecting the significant risks and exposures he faced throughout his decades of service. His work championing firefighter safety, cancer prevention, and national-level advocacy continues to influence fire service policy today.

“Chief Seavey’s impact was felt from the firehouse to the national stage,” said Fire Chief Corinne Piccardi. “His leadership, mentorship, and advocacy improved the lives of firefighters and strengthened the community he served. This dedication ensures his legacy will stand visibly and permanently along a roadway he and our crews respond on everyday.”

I’ve been around this dude for my entire career. From being a rookie riding the line at Company 6 stretching ahead of Company 20, figuring out how to do glow worm stuff on the hazmat team, promoting up the ranks together from Master FF to LT to Captain and working as Company 28 captains for a bunch of years getting pictures of my halligan bar putting in work at “C” shift fires. A lot of learning and laughing over the years and wishing you the best in retirement after 33 years my friend!

Today, my family faced a day we knew was coming.
Chris fought cancer like a heavyweight champion, but sadly, cancer too often wins the fight.

Losing a brother is not easy. Our mother was by his side when God called him home.

My last night with him was Thursday into Friday, and it was something I’ll never forget. We told Mom to get some rest, so the three of us — Nick, John, and I — stayed with him. The boys set an alarm to pump his pain medicine every fifteen minutes.

We talked with him, and he’d still reply — sometimes making fun of us, and of course, we gave it right back. At one point, he squeezed John’s and my hands so hard it hurt — that was pure Chris, still showing his strength.

Then I played one of his favorite songs, “Cats in the Cradle.” With his eyes closed, he sang every word. Halfway through, he asked me to restart it because he’d missed a small part. We played it again, and he sang it flawlessly — though, let’s be honest, he was no Billy Joel!

Chris told us over and over that he’d seen and done everything he wanted to in life. He said he was ready to meet God and was at peace.

My last moment with him was a kiss on the forehead and a simple, “I love you.” I told him, “You’ll be pain-free soon and see the most beautiful thing ever. God has you.”

Rest easy, brother. You are loved, and that will never change. Until we meet again — Godspeed, and know you were and are deeply loved.
