Congratulations to Naomi Girma, an American of Ethiopian heritage, for becoming the first woman to break the $1 million transfer fee mark in football/soccer! Naomi joins Chelsea FC from the San Diego Wave.

A remarkable talent, Naomi was named the 2020 U.S. Young Female Player of the Year and the 2023 Female Player of the Year.

: Haile Gerima, an Ethiopian-born and U.S.-educated filmmaker, has dedicated his career to creating and distributing films outside the traditional studio system. He gained recognition for his narrative works such as Bush Mama (1979), Ashes and Embers (1982), and Sankofa (1993). In 1996, Gerima established the Sankofa Video and Bookstore in Washington, D.C., a cultural and intellectual hub offering opportunities for self-expression, interaction, discussion, and analysis through community events. Gerima continues to distribute and promote his films, including his most recent festival success, Teza (2008), which earned the Jury and Best Screenplay awards at the Venice Film Festival. Additionally, he lectures and conducts workshops on alternative screenwriting and directing both in the United States and internationally.

: Julie Mehretu, an Ethiopian-American, has once again broken the record for the highest sale price at auction of any work by an African-born artist. Her abstract painting Walkers with the Dawn and Morning fetched $10.7m at Sotheby's in New York. Her previous record of $9.3m was set last month. Earlier this year, Julie was chosen to create BMW's next Art Car. Her work will be painted onto a BMW car that will be part of the 24 Hours of Le Mans race next year.
