Happy Lammas! 🌾🍞
Celebrated on 1st August, Lammas (from the Anglo-Saxon hlaf-mæsse, or “loaf-mass”) marks the first grain harvest of the year. Traditionally, people baked bread from the new wheat and offered it to deities in thanks for nature’s bounty. Historically, farmers waited until 1st August to harvest grain, believing it brought good luck.
In Pagan and Wiccan traditions today, it’s still a time to honour the harvest, make crafts such as corn dollies, and gather in gratitude. It’s also a lovely moment to reflect on what we’ve grown as we edge toward autumn.
