🦌 Deer Etiquette
• Deer crackers (“shika senbei”) are sold for about ¥200.
• The deer bow when asking for food—super cute! But:
• Don’t tease them—give food promptly.
• Hide the crackers until you’re ready (they’ll mob you if they see them).
• If you feel overwhelmed, show your empty palms and walk away—they usually lose interest.
• The deer are tame, but still wild animals—watch out for:

• Unlike most traditional shrine structures, this striking lion head was actually built in the 1970s, making it a modern but beloved landmark.

The temple is famous for its 1,200+ stone rakan statues (disciples of Buddha), each carved by different people—many were made by amateurs in the 1980s during restoration. That’s why each statue has a unique expression—some are laughing, holding objects like bottles, or even looking playful and silly. It feels like the statues have personalities!

✨ Tips & Advice for Visiting

Bring Cash: The entrance fee per person is 500yen and you can only pay by cash. There is also an eki stamp by the entrance (you need to ask the staff for it)

Hidden Gem: It’s much quieter than big temples like Kinkaku-ji or Fushimi Inari, so you can really enjoy the peace.

Location: It’s tucked away in the Arashiyama area, so you can combine it with the Bamboo Grove or Tenryu-ji for a full day.

Best Season: Autumn (for the colorful leaves) or spring (with blossoms) makes the mossy statues even more magical.

Allow Time to Wander: The fun is in walking slowly and spotting the statues’ funny faces. It’s almost like a treasure hunt.

Shoes: Wear comfy walking shoes—the temple is small but on a hillside, so some paths are a little uneven.
