President Kiir revokes MP Reath Muoch Tang’s appointment following IMF controversy
President Salva Kiir Mayardit has revoked the appointment of Hon. Reath Muoch Tang, a senior member of the Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-in-Opposition (SPLM-IO), from his position as a Member of the Transitional National Legislature.
The decision comes in the wake of a recent controversy surrounding Reath’s participation in an International Monetary Fund (IMF) meeting held in New York last month.
His presence at the event raised eyebrows, particularly after the United States imposed visa restrictions on several South Sudanese officials. Although the official government delegation was later cleared to attend, it disassociated itself from Hon. Reath, insisting he had not been authorized to represent the country.
Despite this, Reath went on social media claiming he was the one representing South Sudan at the IMF, not the government delegation—a move that sparked public confusion and criticism.
It remains unclear in what capacity Reath traveled to the U.S. and what his current status is, given that he was serving as a sitting MP in South Sudan at the time. His prolonged stay abroad has raised questions about whether he is on self-imposed exile or undertaking unofficial political engagements without the knowledge of his party or government.
