Anglesey Superkarts - what a weekend!
For me, it was a total leap into the unknown: first time racing long-circuit in a kart, first time driving Anglesey. I packed up, set off on my own, and just thought, let’s see what happens. And what a weekend it turned out to be.
Race 1 was in the wet, 17th on the grid I managed to finish 11th. Races 2 and 3 in the dry gave me the chance to push, and the feeling of hitting 100mph in a kart was just sensational. The big circuit opened everything up, an opportunity to drive at 100%, wringing the absolute most out of the KZ.
I never expected to be competitive, I’m too heavy, too throttle happy and had no idea on set up… i literally just went for a drive round to enjoy it!
By the end of the three races, I found myself second in class and with a trophy, which was unexpected!
None of it would have happened without Mark, Scott, Ross, and Matt at Jade Karts. The work they put in before Heat 1 was the difference between me racing and me packing up early.
To think that a kart – with nothing more changed than a sprocket swap from short-circuit spec, plus leathers and a rain light – can lap at a similar pace to a BTCC car is mind-bending. It makes you appreciate how much performance is hidden in these karts.
Short-circuit KZ karting will always be special, with its elbows-out racing and kerb-hopping, but long-circuit? That’s something else entirely. I honestly don’t know why more KZ drivers don’t give it a try. I will certainly be back for more Superkarts!
You cannot go that fast, that cheaply in any race car, and to be able to go short circuit karting in the same kart with just a sprocket change, you simply cant beat it!
