How many actually realize what's beneath the surfaces we walk, drive, and live atop of here in Pennsylvania...?
Did you know there's a hidden underground city beneath much of northeastern Pennsylvania? If you've been following my channel for any length of time it should be no suprise that underground are hundreds of miles of tunnels, shafts & rooms that were once the place so many men spent long days in to earn a living.
Working 12 hr shifts, going into work before light, working in dark conditions and returning home after the sun set is a life that wasn't easy and the reward was very little, but that was life for many immigrants and locals who were needed for the demand of anthracite coal.
Fortunately for us here in northeast Pennsylvania, there's ways to learn about the world of coal mining with not one, but 4 coal mine tours. Out of the 4, one stands apart because you decend 1,300ft down a slope where you end up 300ft below the surface.
The Lackawanna Coal Mine Tour was my first ever coal mine tour as a kid and no matter how many times I've been here, the tour never gets old or boring. This time I brought a friend who never did the tour before and I'm also focusing on showing areas that often aren't seen due to the distant or dark conditions that are encountered in the mines.
If you've ever wondered what a working underground coal mine was like, this is a fantastic way to find out and if you're ever in the area, I highly recommend the tour.
