Another day, another swing bridge ;) This time Oulton Broad Swing bridge, different design to the other 2. Oulton Broad Swing Bridge was constructed in 1907 to replace a single-track wooden trestle bridge, which was built around 1903. Originally double track it is now again back to a single track. While heading to the bridge I was lucky enough to pass an ongoing restoration project, Motor Torpedo Boat 102, which in 1944 carried Winston Churchill and General Eisenhower on their review of the ships assembled on the south coast for the D-Day landings, amazing what you pass sometimes. That completes my tour of some local swing bridges, big thanks again to my tour guide Geoff for sorting these trips and network rail for permission.

These snaps may look like more from Somerleyton Swing Bridge but look closer and you see it's actually Reedham Swing Bridge, same design and upgraded by Network Rail in recent years with new switch gear. Dating around 1903, the line was doubled by 1904. Thanks to Geoff from network rail for arranging the visit. Next up Oulton Broad Swing bridge ;)

For those who may not have got the news, Strumpshaw Steam Engine Rally is no more. Sad news indeed, not because it was one of the nearest rallies for me, but because it was the first steam rally I ever attended. That first visit, on an off chance 10ish years ago, sparked a whole new direction capturing our social history and the amazing rally family, for many a lifestyle choice. Thank you doesn't seem enough, but a massive thank you to everyone involved over the years. Not having what many consider the season opener right on my doorstep will be a big big miss, not just for me, but for the rally family.

Strumpshaw Steam Museum regrets to announce that the steam rally scheduled for the late May bank holiday in 2026 will not take place, although the museum will remain open.

The cost of staging the rally has increased markedly since the Covid pandemic and continues to do so. Other factors in this decision include the cost of VAT, increased administration, loss of some land due to veteran trees having to be fenced off, and the constraints of fitting the rally into the available space.

The museum would like to sincerely thank the organisers, volunteers, suppliers, caterers, traders, exhibitors, public visitors and everybody else who has contributed to the event over so many years. Thank you all for your support, and we hope you will remember the Strumpshaw Steam Rally fondly.

The museum will remain open (Sundays and bank holidays from Easter Sunday to first Sunday in October) and the other events planned for 2026 will continue – Easter Egg Hunt, Norwich Classic Vehicle Club Funday, Strumpshaw Tree Fair, Strumpshaw Trosh, and Model Event.

We look forward to welcoming friends old and new at these events.

As the clocks roll back and the nights get longer we reach the tail end of the rally season. Today I was invited along to a little commercials road run locally before the toys are packed away for the winter. Thanks for the invite, hope you all made it back safely from a trip that included both Norfolk and Suffolk.

This coming Saturday it's the end of season steam up at the Charles Burrell Museum in Thetford, then I might pop along to Bressingham Steam & Gardens in the evening. Last bit of steam before the clocks fall back to GMT. On Sunday I await details of a commercial vehicle road run close to home ;)
