I recently participated in a TV discussion (on සියනෙත රූ youtube channel) where I was asked if the MARKET SYSTEM is the best form of giving FREEDOM to people and protecting DEMOCRACY. It’s a fascinating question that requires a detailed response. I briefly mentioned that while other systems have come and gone, the market economy endures for several reasons. One key reason is its ability to satisfy the human desire for “recognition” (Thumos in Greek). The market system uniquely offers an “unending space for growth,” which resonates deeply with human nature.

However, this high growth has led to significant legal, ecological, and ethical issues. It’s crucial to address these challenges, and the STATE must act as a bargaining power to manage them within a market economy. I elaborated on these points during the discussion and highlighted the need for a balanced approach that integrates growth with responsible governance.
