6 JUNE 44 : D-DAY - Airborne (air)

The D-Day operation of June 6, 1944, brought together the land, air, and sea forces of the allied armies in what became known as the largest amphibious invasion in military history. The operation, given the codename OVERLORD, delivered five naval assault divisions to the beaches of Normandy, France.

We had another fabulous weekend with our dear friend Catherine Wyler, celebrating her 1990 Memphis Belle film, and her father William Wyler’s original 1944 Memphis Belle: A Story of a Flying Fortress. This time we had the great pleasure of presenting at the Warbirds Of Glory Museum / B-25J Sandbar Mitchell Restoration’s annual fundraising gala! Their “Hollywood and History” themed event was a smashing success, and it was such a huge pleasure to play a part!

Patrick Mihalek and his crew are doing something incredibly special with their B-25 restoration, focusing on teaching our youth the art of aircraft design and maintenance, restoration, along with CAD, fabrication, and machining skills... Not to memtion, WWII history!

This truly is a group who hold the key to the future of aviation! If you dont already follow them, clicking on their page above!

Our principal photographer Bryan Heim was sorely missed at this event, but we managed to keep our end on the rails. Next one’s on you, Bryan!

83 Years ago today, the Doolittle Raiders completed the raid on Japan, launching B-25 Mitchell Bombers from an aircraft carrier. Bob Farmer and Bryan Heim Photography have been honored through history group magazine to spend time with the last living Raiders and the last living Raider, Dick Cole. (Mid America Flight Museum B-25)

The Doolittle Raid, also known as Doolittle's Raid, as well as the Tokyo Raid, was an air raid on 18 April 1942 by the United States on the Japanese capital Tokyo and other places on Honshu during World War II. It was the first American air operation to strike the Japanese archipelago.

As witnesses to history at LHG Magazine we feel very honored to have participated in the Doolittle Raider Anniversaries over the past 10 years. April 18, 2020 marks the 78th Anniversary of these brave 80 men who stood up for our freedom in 1942 after the Japanese attacked Pearl Harbor. Living History Group Magazine has always felt honored to part of the media coverage for the Doolittle Raiders 75th Anniversary at Grimes Field Urbana Municipal Airport and the National Museum of the U.S. Air Force in 2017. We dedicated our entire issue #9 to the raiders and the events around Ohio. We are very proud of this issue! If you misssed it, back issues are available here:

God bless the raiders and all of the men and women who fight for our freedom!

While history recognizes D-Day as beginning on June 6, 1944, the invasion truly started the previous night, as thousands of C-47 Dakota plane engines roared to life, ready to carry 13,348 paratroopers from the 82nd and 101st Airborne Divisions over Normandy shortly after midnight.

Gathering invaluable stories from our WWII Veterans for another issue of “Mission Report”, we had the honor and privilege of interviewing 99 year old Bob Buckler from the Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania area today. Bob was a tail-gunner on B-17’s in the 388th Bomb Group’s 562nd squadron. Bob and his crew were forced down in Sweden due to damage and lack of fuel on their 23rd mission and ended up spending close to 10 months interned in Sweden before being returned to England in December of 1944. What an incredible story this guy has to tell!

Bob Farmer and myself (Bryan Heim) have been extremely fortunate over the past 12 years with Living History Group Magazine to meet, interview, and become friends with WWII veterans as we learn their stories and share them with all of you.

We lost Joe Parish this week as he joined the big formation in the sky. It was on his terms, but the loss doesn’t hurt any less for us.

Joe Parish was one of those veterans who not only welcomed us with open arms, but shared WWII stories not even his family had heard. To say we are honored to have known Joe is not a big enough word. We hope that Joe realized that he touched our lives forever and we will always be grateful to have been part of his life.

To the Parish family and all of Joe’s friend we send our deepest prayers, thoughts, and love. Bob and I will always be better for having known Joe. Rest in Peace Sir - thank you for your service and friendship.
