FoD Severe Weather Updates Local weather updates and forecasts for the Forest of Dean and surrounding area.

06/01/2025

Weather warning in place for snow and ice issued for tonight. I think ice is more the concern here, there maybe a slight covering of snow from showers, but temperatures are already sub zero, and there is a lot of surface water around the forest roads.

Sleet/snow showers pushing in from the west at around first light tomorrow are likely to get broken up by the Welsh mountains.

Be careful on the roads first thing.

More significant snow potential for Friday....updates to follow

04/01/2025

As expected snow falling well now across the forest, started as sleet at lower levels but heavier precipitation has brought the temperature down to turn it to snow. A few more hours of snow expected but uncertainty around this - may start to turn sleety around midnight (freezing rain risk).

Please drive carefully if out and about!

Really tricky forecast for this evening/tonight/tomorrow:

5pm-0300am (ISH): snow pushing up from the southwest will likely give 5-10cm of snow across the forest especially over higher areas.

0300-0600am (ISH): snow will turn to sleet/freezing rain potentially causing dangerous conditions - this is quite uncertain and may stay as snow for a bit longer , especially over higher routes.

0600 onwards: temperatures start to rise quite quickly resulting in a rapid thaw of any lying snow, there will also be spells of rain tomorrow - temperatures in the teens by evening.

Monday onwards: becoming colder again with overnight frost and ice hazards.

There is an amber warning out from the Met Office for snow and freezing rain to cater for the risk overnight.

Take care if out and about!

Forecast was about as expected, snow settled over higher parts of the forest but nothing lower down. Little travel disruption as tarmac surfaces too warm. Cold and dry until Saturday where heavy rain will bring much milder weather!

18/11/2024

We may well see some falling snow by morning lasting through until lunchtime tomorrow. Lots of uncertainty about how heavy, and whether there will be any accumulations, but higher parts of the forest may see some settling snow ❄️

A band of heavy rain will push across us overnight and into tomorrow morning. Two risks occur with this, firstly there may be some surface water flooding given the saturated ground we currently have. Secondly, there is a chance rain could turn to sleet and snow above around 200m, potentially giving a slushy covering (see forest elevations attached).

Showers amd longer spells of rain may also turn to sleet and snow tomorrow.

Very messy picture and gusty winds, not a great day to be out and about. See attached images for potential scenarios.

As expected, Met Office weather warning has been upgraded to an Amber warning across the Forest for the strength of the wind tonight. Strongest winds will be evening/overnight, possibly bringing down tree branches etc. Impacts may affect Monday morning travel.

Tomorrow's weather is looking slightly concerning. Rain overnight will clear, but winds will start to pick up around lunchtime. Wind speeds will increase further into the evening and especially overnight, with gusts around 60mph. This is not unusual for coastal areas but is rare to see inland. A Met office yellow warning is issued for strong winds, but I think this will be upgraded to Amber tomorrow.

Cold weather update:

Weekend: cloudy and feeling cold perhaps with a bit of drizzle on Sunday.

Next week: Cold and sunny weather dominating with harsh overnight frosts. Signal for snow has decreased on Wed/Thu (still a small chance). Next weekend is currently uncertain.

Perfect weather for a winter walk ❄️❄️❄️

Felt the cold this week? Next week looks to be even colder.

Winds will change direction to the north from Sunday introducing colder (and clearer) air.

As mentioned previously, this northerly flow is going to be unstable, and may contain areas of snow which will only become apparent at short range (updates to follow if neccesary).

Wednesday is still looking interesting, with rain pushing up from the south west that will turn to snow when it hits the cold air. There are huge question marks around whether it will push far enough north to reach us, and this will need confirming closer to the time. If this snow doesn't reach us we will likely remain in the cold air with further chances of significant snowfall. See attached images that demonstrate current uncertainty.

Keep across forecasts over the next few days!

Cold weather update:

High pressure will dominate our weather for at least the next 7 days which will mean that things stay predominantly dry for us, albeit cold.

The location of the centre of the high pressure slightly to the north of the UK, will allow winds to blow in from a cold easterly direction, (maybe a few snow flurries tomorrow but not amounting to much) which will mean daytime temperatures around 3-7c and night-time frosts likely.

Next week is currently uncertain with weather models showing different outcomes at present. Some models keep things mainly dry, while others try to bring in wet weather from the west. If the latter happens, this brings about the risk of significant snowfall. Long way off yet!

Potential for some very strong winds today as storm Henk moves across us. It will certainly be windy, but there is the chance of 70mph winds this afternoon which could be particularly dangerous. Take care if out and about. Met office Amber warning has been issued!
