Wrote this one in a recording studio in Columbus, Ohio.
I was down there with my band, and in the studio next door was a well-known pop punk band. Got to chatting with their guitarist and jokingly told him I could write a catchy pop punk song — anyone can, it’s easy. I was kidding. He challenged me anyway.
Came in the next day with some ideas, wrote and tracked a demo of “Alien.” He loved it. Told me I had to put it on the record. The rest of my band didn’t feel the same way, lol. So the song got tucked away.
Many years later, when I was recording my album, I played the demo for my producer. He said, “Man, we have to put this on the record.”
So we did.
I liked the song — thought it was fun — but wasn’t sure it fit the feel of Pictures on the Wall. Got talked into it anyway. And of course… what song ended up getting released as the single?
Alien.
