It’s officially football season after Friday’s St. Mary Parish Public Schools Jamboree in Franklin.
Central Catholic faced host Franklin in the first game with a temperature of 92 degrees and a heat index of 102 degrees.
And the Hornet’s offense was just as hot. Franklin wasted little time getting on the scoreboard scoring on its first two possessions. Quarterback Dylan Hawkins hit #4 Dewantre Edmond for a 34-yard touchdown, for a 6-0 lead. After a bad snap went over the head of CCHS punter James Sanderson on the Eagles second possession, Franklin took over at Central Catholic's 5-yard line.
Hawkins powered in from a 1-yard out for a 12-0 Franklin lead with 4:43 left in the opening quarter.
The teams played two 15 minute quarters with a 5 minute halftime.
Central Catholic’s offense continued to struggle and Franklin took a 12-0 lead into the halftime.
“Growing pains! We have to overcome that by gaining experience and confidence,” Central Catholic Coach C.L. Grogan said. “We have a lot of first year starters that have to settle into their roles.”
CCHS’ defense found its footing in the second half, led by Xailen Hebert. The senior was active making several tackles. Central Catholic has seven seniors on its roster while Franklin has 12.
Franklin was without starting running back Bridick Joseph, injured in practice.Central Catholic will travel to West St. Mary Friday while Franklin will be on the road at St. Martinville.
In the second game, Patterson beat Morgan City 21-0.
Patterson opened the scoring when quarterback Jaden Coleman hit Jamall Pollard on a 56-yard touchdown pass with 6:12 left in the first quarter.
After a poor MCHS punt, Patterson extended its lead on a short run by Joshua Navy. The ‘Jacks pushed the lead to 14-0, after a 2-point conversion run with 27 seconds in the quarter.
“We did want what we were supposed to do,” Patterson’s first-year Coach Tre’maine Lightfoot said. “We played hard and our kids showed that they can play well under the lights. We were fast and physical on both sides of the ball and that’s what I ask them to do.”
Morgan City’s defense started the second quarter with a sack fumble by Zakyrian Ayers. But quarterback Jonny Lopez was forced into four straight incomplete passes under heavy pressure from the Patterson defense.
“We started two freshmen on defense, Colby Lagarde and Kia Duval and they both played really good, I was happy with our play.” Patterson hit on another big play, when Coleman hooked up with Jailyn McDaniel on a 43-yard strike for a 21-0 lead with 4:57 to play.
Patterson will be at Jeanerette in week 1 while Morgan City will make the short drive to Berwick.
In the next game, West St. Mary ran past Berwick 20-0.
WSM shocked Berwick when Amar Mack took the first play from scrimmage 63-yards for a score on a quarterback keeper, but the play was called back on a spot foul by the Wolfpack.
West St. Mary regrouped and marched the ball downfield en route to a Mack 1-yard touchdown run at 6:50.
Tyen Austin blocked a Berwick punt and recovered it for a WSM touchdown and a 13-0 lead at 2:26.
WSM took that lead into halftime.
West St. Mary added a late second half touchdown to secure the win.Central Catholic will travel to WSM in Baldwin, while Berwick will host local rival Morgan City.
In the finale, Centerville beat Franklin’s junior varsity 14-0.
The Bulldogs will travel to Metairie Friday to face Haynes Academy.
