The world is a mess at the moment, and all the hatred and anger has been getting me down, to be honest. Then we sat down to watch the BBC Proms on the TV and for a couple of hours it all felt better.

First, the traditional Last Night digging deep into one aspect of British culture with its true patriotism and legitimate flag-waving. Yes, there are references to our colonial history that might not sit well with some and might be usurped by others, but they’re references to a past that led to the multicultural Britain we have today. Songs of pride and unity and strength in the face of the enemy.

And then this. Soul Revolution - my kind of music celebrating strength and pride and unity in the face of a different “enemy”. 90 minutes of excellent arrangements of soul and funk classics with a splash of gospel and spiritual joy thrown in.

Worth a watch, definitely.

This morning’s other find - I’ve found other stuff on P&P that I’ve liked so thought I’d take a gamble on this amazing double compilation. Bringing some your way on Tuesday night, no doubt.

I’ll just do an occasional thing for Mixcloud, I thought, 11 years and 500 shows ago…

Bit of a milestone hits in about 15 minutes, featuring everything you see here and a whole lot more.

And I’m not done yet…

This lady. Best thing I’ve seen from Glasto in years. Is she what Amy should have become if the demons hadn’t struck?

One of my earliest musical memories is of “helping” my neighbour clean his racing green Mini Cooper, aged maybe six or seven - not sure. He had an 8-Track player in there which fascinated me, and The Beach Boys Greatest Hits was playing. I’ve loved the sounds that Brian Wilson has created ever since. As I’ve got older I’ve learned how his mind twisted rock and roll and soul into something truly unique. Listening to the classics now, the sixties production sounds so pure and refreshing with perfect harmonies and all the component parts distinctly placed. All that from instruments, mics and tape before I was even born. Rest easy, Mr Wilson - and thanks for all the smiles your songs have brought over nearly six decades.
