So Glen Fricker played Sardis' track "Gremlin" on his live stream today. While he said the song was cool and he liked the vocals, etc., he kept insisting that the drums had to be fake because they sounded too good and were too tight.
lol
We argued a bit about it, and when I offered to send him the files, he backed off and said that they were the best drums he's ever heard then, and that he's happy to be wrong.
Let me state for the record, those are indeed REAL drums, and yes, Josh is just that good. They are not quantized to the grid at all. There is a snare sample blended for some reinforcement, and some of the tom hits were flown in from a different spot in the song whenever there was too much cymbal bleed going into the hit. That's it.
Having said that, I definitely have NO problems with people programming drums and using samples, or editing tightly, etc. Heck, I do that stuff all the time too, it's often the most sensible thing to do for modern music. Sardis' thing is just being more old-school, cuz that's just the style of band we are.
In the end, Glen was gracious about it, saying that it's good for all, including himself, to continue learning, and I agree.
