Shirley Chisholm made history in 1972 when she became the first Black woman to run for President of the United States, breaking barriers in a political system overwhelmingly dominated by white men. Her campaign, guided by her motto “unbought and unbossed,” rejected the traditional expectations of politicians, emphasizing independence, courage, and the refusal to be sidelined in spaces where women and Black leaders had long been excluded.

Chisholm’s approach challenged the norms of political power by insisting that marginalized voices need not wait for permission to participate. She famously said, “If they don’t give you a seat at the table, bring a folding chair,” encapsulating her determination to create space for herself and others in arenas that had historically denied them access. Her message resonated far beyond the campaign trail, inspiring future generations to assert their presence in politics and leadership.

While Chisholm did not win the presidency, her run transformed public perception of who could lead America. Her campaign demanded recognition of Black women as credible contenders and expanded the political imagination for millions who had long been invisible in such spaces. Today, her legacy serves as a reminder that challenging entrenched systems often requires bold action and unwavering self-belief, leaving an enduring mark on American political history.

Many Americans think of Memorial Day as a long weekend of barbecues and time off, but the holiday’s origins run much deeper—and are rooted in Black history. In Charleston, South Carolina, on May 1, 1865, just weeks after the Civil War ended, freed Black residents organized one of the earliest Memorial Day ceremonies. They honored more than 250 Union soldiers who had died in a Confederate prison camp and were buried in a mass grave.

The event was remarkable: the community rebuilt the soldiers’ graves, decorated them with flowers, and led a parade that included Black Union troops and schoolchildren, turning a somber act of remembrance into a powerful public statement. This gathering is now recognized by historians as one of the first Memorial Day commemorations in the United States.

While many today celebrate the holiday with cookouts and vacations, the Charleston ceremony reminds us that Memorial Day began as an act of honor, remembrance, and liberation. It highlights how formerly enslaved people played a central role in shaping the nation’s traditions, ensuring that the sacrifices of those who fought—and died—for freedom would not be forgotten.

Howard University honored one of its brightest stars by renaming its College of Fine Arts after Chadwick A. Boseman in 2021. The late actor and alumnus, who became a global cultural icon, had been deeply involved as a student, advocating for the arts programs he loved.

The tribute went beyond a name on a building. It included scholarships for students who reflected Boseman’s creativity and commitment, giving future artists a chance to shine. Plans were also set to develop new facilities to support generations of students, backed by donations from Boseman’s family and supporters.

The move served as a powerful reminder of Boseman’s impact, both as an artist and as an advocate for education, leaving a lasting legacy at Howard University.

Donald Trump is again in the spotlight, this time over a fight about birthright citizenship. He’s been pushing hard to stop kids born in the U.S. to immigrant parents from automatically becoming citizens. Trump says the 14th Amendment was originally meant to protect the rights of newly freed Black Americans after slavery, not today’s children of immigrants.

His move to issue an executive order on this has sparked a major legal battle. Lower courts blocked it, and now the case has reached the Supreme Court. Justices are weighing whether Trump can change how the Constitution is interpreted on who gets citizenship at birth.

Supporters back his effort as a way to limit what they see as unchecked immigration. Critics argue the Constitution clearly grants citizenship to anyone born in the country, and that Trump’s plan could undo a long‑standing right.

The outcome of this case could change how citizenship works in the United States, and it’s fueling heated debate across the country.

During his recent visit to Africa, Pope Leo XIV addressed young African students, encouraging them to remain in their home countries and contribute to national development rather than seeking opportunities abroad. He highlighted the challenges of brain drain, urging youth to apply their education and talents to tackle issues like corruption, inequality, and poverty. His remarks emphasized that young people could shape the future of their nations by driving progress from within. The Pope’s message underscored the long-term impact of emigration and called on Africans to recognize the potential of their countries and the role they could play in building a stronger future.
